Title: Need Help Finding a Marvel Font
Post by: wakerlet on January 19, 2005, 08:42:02 pm
I'm putting together my instruction sheet for my Marvel Madness arcade machine.  I'd like to create a title using a font close to the Marvel logo (see image).  Does anyone have anything close to this?  A Windows TTF file would be nice if you have it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Todd

It'll be a custom-designed logotype, so you probably won't find an exact match. You might find something similar that they've probably used as a starting point to bastardise into their logo.

I gather Marvel use Comicraft (http://www.comicraft.com/) to design their typefaces (for balloon lettering and such).

Interstate (http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/fontbureau/interstate/blackcompressed/testdrive.html?s=MARVEL&p=72) is quite similar.

Thanks Oddfeld.  Although it's a hack, I think it turned out nice.

Well, the 'N' and the 'D' look a bit out of place. As I said, that font is just a starting point, you'd need to convert it to paths in Illustrator and modify it a bit. There may be well be a font that's a bit closer.

To make it look more like the Marvel logotype I would probably hack the bottom quarter or so of the 'N' off then stretch it vertically back to the same cap height so you end up with a bottom heavy non-symmetrical 'N' (much like the 'A') and make the 'D' more of a semi-circle with no flat part in the middle of the curve (so it's more like the shape of the bowl of the 'R'). Then I would track the letters in more than you have them so they're overlapping a bit more, like they are in 'MARVEL'.

I don't actually have that typeface but here's a quick photoshop visual made from your JPEG so you can see what I mean:

Thanks for the help Oddfeld.  I know just enough waste hours trying to get this right :)
