Title: MAME Cabinet Completed With Pics.*updated March 18*
Post by: motorfish on October 15, 2002, 06:14:31 pm
(Updated Oct 2nd, 2003)

Hey all! Sorry for my long absence!

I'm in the process of getting all of my MAME stuff together again. I've fixed the links to the pics (and I'll get new ones up shortly)

Links for those on slower connections and don't want to wait for the images to load.

That is BEAUTIFUL!!!! The marquee, CP overlay. and instructions on the bezel all look so professional!  Is this a scratchbuilt or a conversion?

I definately like your white-on-black instructions better than my black-on-white....

Congratulations on one of the best-looking MAME cabinets around!

Well crap... now I need to make an overlay for my own CP. That contact paper just won't do after see this...

Plus I need to get around to actually finishing up my bezel art...

Good job, btw...

SirPoonga:

Here's what I'm running. (I'm including as much information as possible in order to possibly narrow down what the the problem might be)

OS - Windows 2k, all critical updates included

MAME version -  MAME23 v. 58

Eygo 27" Monitor

Mainboard - Shuttle AMD AK12 mainboard, latest 4 in 1 drivers installed

Processor - AMD 1600

RAM - (x2) 512 PC 133 sticks

Video Card - G-Force 2 MX 400, latest drivers installed

Power supply - 340W
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The problem is that for some reason, MAME will constantly crash out to the desktop if left in "attract" mode for too long (usually an excess of 4 hours) Also, sometimes, the computer will randomly restart as well. Screensaver and power save modes are all disabled.

I have MAME32 v.58 running on another computer which is identical in specs, except it has a GForce 1 card, and a Soundlaster Audigy card instead, it it can run attract mode all night, and into the next day.

I've checked the CPU and Sys. tempature, and they all seem to be within limits of tolerance. I ran a RAM diagnostic program top see if perhaps on of the sticks of RAM was bad, but durring a 6 hour burn in test, all tests passed fine.

I'm fairly stumped on this one.

Oh, here's the control bezel art you wanted to see:

Does the crash appear if the computer is outside the cabinet?  Are you checking the temperature after four hours of operation while the machine is in the cabinet with the rear door closed?  Arcade cabinets have notoriously bad airflow...

Run MAME from a command prompt without going through a front end.... a useful error message may be displayed after the crash.

If you run without sound do you get the crash?

Have you updated the motherboard's BIOS recently?  I had a number of problems with MAME that were cleared up by a BIOS upgrade...

Personally I think that looks great!

Anonymously:

Metal Slug 4 is running on MAME32 v.6.1, and works perfectly from start to end.

In order to get the ROM to run, a friend of min was required to alter/add some code to either the ROM or the emulator, I'm not sure which. (That kind of stuff is way out of my league)

I can ask him how he managed to get it to run.

SirPoonga: The machine to the left is my little Video City Japanese sit-at.

I left this machine as a JAMMA cabinet, (at least that way, I'm running a FEW licensed games!) :D

Also in the picture is what the MAME machine looked like before covnersion.

It's a conversion from a Valley Dynamo cab. The design of the cabinet lends itself perfectly to accomodate the requirements of a MAME machine.

Wow!

What a great looking cabinet! Like seemingly everyone else who's posted, I was very, very impressed with the CP artwork and the bezel instructions.

Without being too obvious, I'd really love to see the original files you used to create the bezel instructions. (If you don't want to share the originals, I'd understand, but in that case how about a jpeg showing a bit more detail! ;)

I've got a small 4x8" instruction card on my cabinet, but you've inspired me to re-think that and create a new bezel just chock-a-block full of instructions!

Nice, nice job -- just goes to show that the little touches are just as important to the final product.

Omg!!!  Hey Motorfish, you know what I JUST realized, we have the EXACT same cabinet!  You know that one that's setup to the right of your sit down japanese cabinet.
http://www.geocities.com/cthulhuluke/Cabinet/Cabinet.html
Mine has the front and the back, I just have them de-attached until I get all the good stuff in it (such as a PC that is small enough for me to put the coin door in, which I don't know is possible, and a 25" television.)  So they are called Valley Dynamo cabinets?  cool.  I got mine for free though so I didn't really care what kinda cabinet it was.
BTW:  I will have more pictures of the cabinet once I find this damn scanner cable that I lost.  Cause I have about 12 pictures to upload, and they're all ones people here would want to see, so I'll inform you guys when I have them up.

Very nice cp overlay, motorfish!  It looks great with all the text and control info on it.

Question for you... Is the pic you posted to scale, and if so what are you using for a trackball?  That looks like a pretty tight squeeze if it's a 3" tball because of the roughly 6" x 6" housing size.  I'm in the process of designing a new control panel & overlay for a project I'm working on, and my 3" tball always ends up out in the middle of nowhere just to fit it in.

Great work!  Now I've got to start mine over (again)...    ;D

Post by: motorfish on December 26, 2002, 03:20:18 am
The control panel is to scale. The trackball that came with this cabinet had only a 5" X 5" footprint, which allowed me an extra inch of workable space on the panel. Here's a look at the footprints of all of the components underneath the panel:

P.S., I need to order a spinner from you this week! Definately the best I've seen!

Post by: OSCAR on December 26, 2002, 03:43:47 am
Well you certainly did a great job utilizing your real estate, that's for sure!  Very well laid out, too.  Trackball's can be a little tricky to place because many people underestimate the amount of room that they really require.  A common "oops" is to place a joystick or spinner directly above them, or else place them too close to the monitor glass.  And then when ya go to play a game like Golden Tee, Shuuz, or Bowling, you realize that you jam your fingers into the other controls or glass as you're whipping the trackball around.  Your layout looks great with the spinner and 4-way offset so that doesn't happen.

It also looks like you left enough room for a Pro...   ;)

Post by: StingMe on December 26, 2002, 02:35:56 pm
Hmmm...Motorfish's CP layout is very similar to mine...just another case of convergent evolution I suppose ;)

FYI the CP is 13.25" x 28.5" and includes an Oscar Pro spinner, Happ 3" highball (will probably convert this to a standard), 2 fixed joysticks and 1 removable stick (all mounted to Oscar plates). All mounting plates are coverd by the CP graphic and plexi, except fotr the removable one. The lone rectangular area is home for the stacked iPAC and OptiPAC.

The CP overlay was printed on high gloss paper at Kinkos. Cost was about $11.00.

One eighth inch clear acrylic covers the control panel graphic, which keeps it flat, protects it, and gives it a nice glossy shine. :)

Very very nice looking.  That wiring is gonna look pretty insane with all those buttons.  Good professional overlay on that cp for sure.  My only change would be moving the 7th button down to the bottom left because I use the A button for the Neo Geo with my thumb like the original Neo Geo joysticks (although I don't like the real neo geo joysticks, corners = bad for those who know what I'm talkin bout.)  And I'd also flip the white and black on the very top right hand side, so it looked a little more symmetrical to your eyes.  The way your overlay's image is more aimed towards the user's playing instead of a compilation of pictures is a nice touch, I would go either way but if I were to go the way you're going, I'd hope mine looked like yours, cause it's very well done.  If you had enough space and resources to do some new, cool bezel that might look good as well, but it's all up to you.

Motorfish, this is amazing artwork.  Was is all done with Vectors?  Any tips for how you did this work? (and how long it took you?)

One thing I noticed while designing and printing my CP art that people doing these precise overlays may want to keep in mind: Kinko's may give you a runaround on exact printing.  I took a .PDF file to them and then measured what they printed out -- it was off about 1/8" on each of the sides (not a lot, admittedly, but enough).  They gave me some story about how their vinyl printer never printed things exactly right in both dimensions -- I pointed out that Adobe and the printer manufacturers have done a lot of work to ensure that didn't happen.

Advice from experience:
- take a tape measure with you when you pick up your printing.
- print the image with a border larger than your CP and trim it yourself.
- go to a professional printer with better quality control than Kinko's.

good advice.. I would be extremely upset if I paid money to get an exact printout.. and they essentially said "well, better luck next time"

Dave_K.:

Actually, strangely enough, I didn't use any vectors while creating this image. It was all made from using the marquee selection tools, the Stroke command, and I used the bezier curves to achieve some of the srtaight diagonal lines.

What I did for this instance is since I had already drilled out the holes before I did the graphics, I went ahead and scanned in the plastic overlay after I had all of the holes drilled through it.

This gave me the exact dimensions of where the graphics needed to be. ( consequentialy, because of this, you'll notice that my graphics on the smaller control pannels are not symetrical, because they have slightly varying[sp?] distances between themselves. Live and learn I suppose )

from there, I measure out the footprints of the components and link those layers t the appropriate holes (ie, the left joystick hole to the left joystick footprint graphic, and so on...)

As far as time went, This one was kind of tough for me to nail a design I liked. My biggest problem was that since I had already drilled the holes, my graphics now had to work around the holes, rather than vice versa, which limited me to certian sizes and shapes. ( like for example, the boarder around the Player 2's contoler main circle graphic collides into the boarder for the emulation buttons. OOPS! Something I had to live with. )

Because of this, I spent about two and a half days on what should've been a two to three hour job. It was a lot of trial and error, making graphics, testing them, throwing them away, that sort of thing.

But in the end, I think it turned out ok for the space I had to work with.

Good advice indeed! I forgot to mention that I gave myself a one quarter inch border around the outside (extra black space) to compensate for possible shrinkage while printing. Can't be too carefull.

is that sort of like bitter beer face? :P
sorry for a hair OT! :)

Now by printing a border around your artwork.. this might safeguard from some margin problems... but if they print slightly off scale... there isn't any help here is there?

I have been looking at your cab's design pic a bit and I have to say its VERY NICE !!!!

everything is on 1 panel.... but it seems well organized... very nice artwork on the control panel.....

but I have a stupid question.... is the pic more or less to ratio ?? cos it seems like its kinda short on the bottom half ?!?!

or are you planning on a sitting down while playing ??....

It's a Japanese sit down model.

if its a sit down model....

then you might have to worry about the knee space....

you know... when you sit down.... your knee sticks out....

for a normal SF 6 button layout... it might be ok....

but your panel has soooo much stuffs.... like the 4 way is like more inside....
you might have a hard time reaching it.....

I'm also planning a sit down cab also.... (cos I don't want to stand for hours when playing... heee heee....)

and I currently planning a "cave in" part under the contrl panel so that I can sit comfortably when playing....

something that needs to keep in mind when doing sit down cab....

hope it helps....

Here's the pics of the old cabinet with the newly revamped graphics!

Also, I've added a tiny analog joystick near the bottom of the control panel which allows the User to navigate through all of the Windosw and MAME menus with full mouse controls (lft andr right click are buttons 1 and 2 Player One), so now the cabiner is completely mouse free!

Also, the Mame Classic cab is almost complete as well!

SirPoonga:

Exactly! That's what I was thinking when I put it in. It works just like the little bump thingy on notepad/laptop computers. I used the analog portion of a Wingman joypad, since the analog joystick board inside is only 3/4" X 1 1/2".

It's SO much more convienent than having to go for the mouse every time I want to change the configuration of a game. I suppose you COULD use it for analog games as well, if you really wanted to.

SONIC:

A friend of mine found a way to re-compile MAME so that KOF 2002 and Metal Slug will run. I have no idea how to do this. Try Nebula or NeoRage X emulators as well, to see if it's properly run the Metal Slug 4 ROM.
Title: Re:MAME Cabinet Completed With Pics.
Post by: SirPoonga on February 20, 2003, 12:35:45 am
Yeah, you have to compile mslug4 into mame.  There's a way to add it to nedula too.  I suggest nebula for neogeo games as the performance is much better than mame.  And if I remember memcards work in nebula too.

I'm pretty sure at least that is it.  That's definitely some quick thinking though by MotorFish.  My only question is what kinda buttons are those lighter blue ones on the top right corner?  Are they competitions or something, because they look different than the ones on the main 2 joysticks.  And did you buy brand new rotary joysticks from Happs or something?  Or did you fix up some old ones, and put the Super joystick on em?

Hello everyone!

Very sorry for the long delays in replying to these messages. To those who've emailed me:

I need a little more time to work on the control panel ideas you've given me. I haven't forgotten about, and I'm not ignoring you! :)

Here's a look at the new bezel artwork: (because of my limited bandwidth, I can only display these for a short time)

On the little blue buttons:

They are small momentary contact pushbuttons sold by Happ Controls, item number 60-1200-12. These are great, and are smaller versions of the regular button used in Japanese Aero City sit-at machines.

The rotarys are new Happ's joysticks.

you've definitely inspired me!! i was wondering how you designed
the CP overlay to get everything perfectly aligned with your layout,
then i read that you scanned your pre-drilled overlay first, and did the
art around it. sounds like a great idea, but you said you'd do otherwise.
what would you have done instead? i just have no clue how i'd get
everything lined up if the overlay wasn't scanned first.

thanks in advance, and keep up the GREAT work!!

For mine, I designed the control panel layout in Visio at full size, and printed it out and transferred it to the CP for drilling.  Then, I copied the Visio image into Corel Photo-PAINT and built the overlay around it.

What in the world is you analog cursor controller???
Where did you get it from?
I'm assuming it just works like one of those "nubs" you'll see on some laptops...

Also...
Did you build those cabs from scratch? The top is bigger than the bot & I don't remember seeing too man cabs like that (I know it's probably to house a bigger monitor, but I still dont' remember seeing any like that)

They look great!!!
Do you have (or plan on having) swappable panels? What's the Trackball overlay all about if not?

Sorry for all the Qs, I'm just a little impressed!

Great work!

Great looking stuff.

However, I hate to be the bearer of bad news (unless this has already been stated, but there appears to be a spelling mistake.

In "Functions of the Emulation Buttons" regarding the Escape key, you have written:

"This button allows the user to exit the game at any time.  Also, it allows the user to exit all TAB an F2 menus."

This should read "...TAB and F2 menus."

Apart from that, it's great.

Both cabinets are pretty awesome, and have been an inspiration to me.

I've noticed that the CP graphics have been copied several times but your original design is still the best IMHO.

There is one thing I would have done differently though. If I had the time and money to build two cabinets I'd try to make them contrast more. For example I'd fit the 'classic' cabinet with Wico balltop leaf joysticks and leaf buttons. You could still keep the same colour scheme as the Wico balltops are available in blue, black, or purple. Also I would have gone for a less cramped two buttons per player layout on the Classic CP as very few games (apart from fighters that can be played on your other cabinet) require more than this.

Don't get me wrong your classic CP looks very cool, it's just that it looks very similar to the CP of your other machine.

The cursor control is actually the thumbpad from a Wingman control pad. I mounted the small board which the actual thumbpad is mounted on the the bottom of the inside of the control panel. The rest of the guts of the control panel are simply laid out on the inside of the control panel:

How'd you get the analog stick to work as a mouse in windows?  Is it a driver or something?  I'd really love to know!

I'm referring to this instruction card:

The part about "complete desktop control"

Great looking stuff.

However, I hate to be the bearer of bad news (unless this has already been stated, but there appears to be a spelling mistake.

In "Functions of the Emulation Buttons" regarding the Escape key, you have written:

"This button allows the user to exit the game at any time.  Also, it allows the user to exit all TAB an F2 menus."

This should read "...TAB and F2 menus."

Apart from that, it's great.

I also hate to point this out, but there's another spelling error.  "Specificly" is actually spelled "Specifically" on the description for your 4-way joystick.  Tats wy eye luv spel chekerz, thayr nevur rong? (I know this sentance is right 'cause my checker told me so!  ;D )

Apocalypse Never

I got a small program off of the internet called Joymouse which will let me use the joystick as a mouse. I have the joystick simply plugged into the USB slot in the PC. It works really well. ^_^

Thanks to everyone who've pointed out the spelling errors in the bezel graphics. I'm going to make new bezels for both machines, and I've decided that I may as well update all of the graphice in the meantime. I'll be applying all of the gramatic and spelling changes to the new graphics.

This I'll proofread them all before I hit the printer!

^_^

Pardon me for saying so but I dont think you should invest in new artwork just for a few misspelled words. I think your artwork is just fine as it is. Use the money for pizza instead ;)

As Stormy of SeaLab 2021 would say "You got PACMAN....cool i got ups! WAKA WAKA WAKA"

Thanks Dan!  I've been looking for nice hi-res joysticks and buttons and yours are by far the best I've seen.

hey Motorfish, i'm researching my quad player design as well, can't wait to see how yours turns out. you know with all the effort and time you put in, 'project' diary site is definitely in order; if you dont have webspace or the will to develop a site showing your building process, perhaps someone here in the community would want to offer that chore (and you just send them pics and "progress updates"... no i'm not offering to do this as i'm not a very good web designer ('m sure theres much better peeps at that viewing these forums).

just an idea since you've done a great job on your previous 2 cabs, very well polished.
