Not that I play sports games anyways... :P
-
I feel sorry for sega sports. they were doing so well agaist EA, starting to gain on them and then BAMM, and this is just the kick to the nuts while your down.
-
Sounds like a good thing to me. I only buy EA sports games.......
-
monopolizing the market is never good.
-
thats it, from now on im never buying any EA sports games!!!
oh wait, i havent bought a sports game, since "Ice Hockey" on NES =P
-
who do they think they are fooling?
"I think there's plenty of room for competition," said Probst. "At the end of the day its who can build the highest quality products. There's plenty of room for other third party companies - and console first-party companies - to do that. Just because EA Sports and ESPN are partnering I don't think people are going to run for the hills and not compete with us."

Your missing out then..
NFL NBA NCAA 2k5 were ALL better than EAs counterparts
and NHL was realllly good as well..
EA sucks, if i wanted arcade football, id play blitz..
-
WOW!!!
Hmm.. I hope there's time to combine ESPN 2k5 presentation with Madden 2005 gameplay for next years game. That'll be a GREAT football game!
I would boycott the series if Madden was cut lose. Hey, if EA does do that, Sega should sign Madden!!

want to see a bleak future? it may be coming sooner than later for the game industry..
rupert murdock has been sniffing around the gaming industry , seeing ther potential profit of games like halo 2 and others he naturally wants a piece of the pie to add to his communications empire..
small mom and pop development houses will soon be unable to compete in the game industry against 800lb gorilla conglomerates like that..
everyone will be buying everyone else up what you weill have soon is the same kind of cookie cutter garbage we hear on our radio stations, except in video game form..
this has been seen in one form or another slowly for the last decade, but a huge multimedia conglomerate like that buying everything up would cause an excelleration of the trend that wont bode well for the end user...
Not to mention pricing.. the word is on the street that there will be a 5 -10 dollar increase on all game titles to be had this year.. :-[

EA is doing this because when the new EA football is annoounced it probably won't be "Madden" anymore. Why pay Madden for his name, ESPN for their name, and the NFL for exclusive rights on one title? Besides, rumor has it that Madden wants to retire anyways, and that would limit his effectiveness as a spokesman.
EA knew that without Madden's name, the football fans would reevaluate their game of choice, and with ESPN taking a big bite out of Madden's sales this year, they knew that they might lose those football dollars. Madden isn't all EA has, but it's bigger than MVP Baseball, which they've had locked up for a couple years, and they far from have a stranglehold on the NBA game, since the Sega Sports/ESPN 2K series has pretty much gone 50/50 with NBA Live since it went multi-platform.
Plus c'mon. EA has got to have something against SEGA. The Genesis basicially made EA Sports, but I think EA took it somewhat personally when SEGA brought out Joe Montana Football, a very similar looking game to Madden, back in 1991/92. When SEGA released Dreamcast, and looked to EA for sports support, EA not only turned their back on SEGA, but ripped them in interviews in gaming mags, all the while hyping PS2... the rumor there is, Sony gave them early dev kits and a lower per unit cost, so it would be easier to flood the market with EA Sports games. I don't know if that's true, but SSX was easily the most polished game at PS2 launch... Now EA has basically managed to drive every other company out of the sports business, except SEGA. And lo and behold... SEGA actually carves out a foothold, while at the same time doing something EA doesn't want to EVER see... dropping prices. So what do you do if you're EA? Buy all of SEGA's licenses out from under them!!
Dirty business man.

many race car games cant obtain the licenceing for the vehicles in their games because of financial or exclusivity clauses they may have with the car manufacturers, but that doesnt stop them from creating some of sickest racing games out there.(ie. the burnout series)
i think this kind of approach could be utilized form a sports perspective as well.
out of the door, it wont be the pats or the 49ers, but with a sufficiently powerfull and comprehensive character/stat/roster creation infrastructure, coupled with image and content uploading/sharing,i think sega could devlop a top rate open ended football game and leave it to the modders and sports staticians to create the full NFL lineup for import from xbox live..
-
i never understood the value of having licenced players in sports games. at the end of the day it should be how the game actually plays that is important - not the player/team name/logo that appears on the screen.
hell maybe sega might use this as opportunity to take the games in different direction...
a galactic league with teams from different planets - alien players with different physical attributes, abilities and skills?
not being to replicate the real world due to licencing agreements has never held back innovative software companies.
Sonic Soccer anyone?
-
CYBERBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I have never, and will never, buy any game made by EA.
-
All my arguements have been made in this thread.
