Title: Tempest Mame - updated 03-08
Post by: Paladin on January 10, 2005, 02:24:29 pm
My new project is a Tempest upright:

I can't afford to spend the money needed to convert it back (I have already done one, so I know how much it would cost), so I'm making it a vertical MAME cabinet.

I was toying with the idea of using resized Galaga side and marquee art, as well as a modified Galaga CPO.

Daaaaaaamn... those Tempest cabs are so fresh... SNAP!

I think you should make the second cab into literally, a Tempest 2 cab. I mean, a MAME restoration is awesome and all, but when I saw your post title, I was DYING to see what a Tempest 2 cab looked like!!

No, do Major Havoc artwork, it is the only game other than Tempest that belongs in a Tempest cabinet.

Don't waste your money on Galaga artwork, you have the wrong cabinet.

I agree that custom "Tempest 2" artwork would be pretty neat.

We should write a Tempest 2 game to go with it....

I love it when parts show up on the doorstep!  The cabinet now has new side art, T-molding and leg levelers.  I also have red translucent buttons that I plan on lighting up like Knievel has done.  I've updated page 5 of my website with some pics of the side art process.

Well, I fell in love with Knievels lit translucent buttons, so I decided I had to try.

Wire the #44 lights on the coin door to the 5V lines from the computer, and see if that helps (5V is the red and black pair, 12V is the yellow and black).  It just looks like they're running too bright (as you stated).

Looks great so far, would inspire me to build my own if I knew I could get sideart!!

Nice work so far. But if you change your mind,
Just to let you know ArcadeRenovations has a working Tempist CPU board for sale. http://www.arcaderenovations.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=76&cat=0&page=

I replaced the coin door lights with automotive Sylvania #1893 bulbs.  They are the exact same size as arcade #44 bulbs, but they work with 12 volts instead of 6.  Everything is wired up and working, now it's just fine tuning and final touch ups.  I updated the website, and added a Page6 with final pictures.

80s Man, thanks for the tip but I already have a couple extra non working Tempest boards that I just have to get fixed.

Speaking of that, does anyone know how I might go about getting a Tempest CPO modified to have the instruction and scoring text removed?  I can't find a copy of the Tempest CPO online.

I HAVE IT!  ;D  ;D  ;D

The guy who did the Tempest CPO repro artwork sent it to me, minus the text.  It is a 300 dpi Photoshop image (PSD). It has the background art, plus a layer that has the player 1&2 start men, and the circle art for the spinner.

It's 13.4 MB.  :D

How would you like to get it? Which format?

I tried uploading it to the arcade artwork library page once, but it didn't work.  :-\

too big, there's some problems with large files ;(

I can host the file and up-it to the private AAL ftp, in order to let mahuti feed it on the library.

check pm for some details

Also, I have a high res image of the Tempest Marquee (8.6 MB) If anyone is interested in that.

EDIT:

Hey, I just uploaded it to my server. Hopefully someone gets it up on the AAL.

Right click Save Target As or Save Link As...

I've been looking for a good hi-res or vector image of the Tempest CPO and haven't been able to find one online including via the links here which seem to be longer active.  Does anyone have such an image?
