I am wondering if they are really as good as they look.
i assume that PSP games play/look somewhere between PS1 and PS2
I see they are currently available on ebay for about 270 quid. assume this is premium price as not available in UK yet.
The Ridge Racers game looks good
a portable version of Tekken would be awesome :)

A friend of a friend here in teh US bought one off ebay for $500. He likes it, but i dont think im gonna get one in the first year.
I have a DS though andlove it.

I have an GBA SP - how much better is a DS apart from having 2nd touch screen? figured it probably not worth upgrading. not sure if/how SP games will run on DS. Wonder if my Flash card will work
-
Gba games look great. And flash cards work. See here:

I'll be waiting until the PSp has been out in the US long enough for a significant price drop before I buy one. MSRP is just too much for a handheld, and of course if you want one now you'll be paying a lot more than MSRP.
Now the DS on the other hand, I'm sorely tempted to just run out and buy one right now.

the DS is sufering from DS software slow release schedualing. If you want GBA games on it though, plenty of those.
Feel the magic, MArio 64 DS, and Mr driller are all top notch games though.

Mine should be here in the next week.Cant wait, got lumines, ridge racers a 512produo and screen protectors coming.Ive been putting off getting one but talking to friends that work for sony release here in nz is going to be further away than the US (considering ds isnt due till feb).
A new case is in the works allowing 3 recharges http://psp.ign.com/articles/578/578449p1.html sounds like a big help.
Ive started fidling with 3gpconverter to check out what mp4 video encoding is like. And while it isnt the greatest app for the job (i dont have nero recode) It seems that makeing portable movies for psp is quite simple.I encoded some anime and an entire 25min epp(inclueding startup) came out to be 90megs with pretty good quality.I cant wait to see how it comes out on a psp.

Got the psp yesterday.Had a play with the media side of things and its pretty darn cool.Any problems if youd call them that are supposed to be fixed in the first firmware update.Played an hour or so of ridge racers and im a definate fan.Playing a game that looks that nice and smooth on such a small screen seems almost wrong compared to what im used to seeing.loving it well worth the dollars and ive found nothing wrong with it inclueding pixel wise.Cant wait for lumines to arrive next week.Oh yeah and ridge racers is definitly import friendly as it has descriptions in english voice, pictures and all main menus in english only the sub menus arnt but they have the images to go with it.
-
There have been some cmplaints about the button layout that you can fully press some of them down dur to being placed too close to the screen.
I had a chance to see one at CES. I'm still not too impressed. My PocketPC plays all GBA games and others more graphically intense.
I'm more interested in getting the Gizmondo. Sega, EA, and a binch of other developers have already signed up.

There is also apparently a problem w/ the PSP that when you twist it in a certain way, it ejects the media from the unit. Niiice.

Yeah ive seen a couple of twist vids but now ive got mine i wouldnt try it.Its pretty sturdy and it might break. It would be like twisting a cellphone or calculator. The plastic case is quite tuff. The umd drive definitly is the flimsiest thing on it though. If you push on it when its closed it has a tiny bit of movement, but then again thats to be expected.
-
what did youpay for yours?
-
Too much :) $350 with ridge racers and screen protecters.Im extremely happy with it so paying a little extra to get it now is no biggie for me.
-
You should check out "Kai" ( http://www.teamxlink.co.uk/ ). The guy there wrote a working protocol for PSP before it was even released (pretty impressive!). Some games don't work (yet), but for the ones that do, it's really fun to play games with people from people around the world.
Joining a game of golf B-) (http://gprime.net/images/john/2005-01-20/psp_kai3.jpg)

We have a few PSP's floating around the office as well as PSP dev kits. The PSP is insanely cool! The screen is so huge and totally gorgeous!
-
Any word yet on it's possibility as an emulation platform? Since it can read and write to the Sony media sticks? Is there DRM safeguards or could someone actually start hacking MAME for this thing?
-
we'll probably need a mod chip in it before we can run code on it
-
You can run stuff off the memory stick already (there was a fux0red firmware update floating around a while ago that turned your PSP into a nice shiny brick), but they aren't sure if it will run unsigned code yet.
