Title: FE resolution
Post by: Scoobie on January 01, 2005, 07:49:45 pm
I've been trying to get various frontends to run at my TV's resolution of 640x432.  I am currently trying Mamewah and Kymaera.

Has anyone been able to get either of these FE's to run at an odd resolution like this?  What I'm looking for, is how to get the FE to recognize a resolution other that the defaults of 640x480, 800x600 or 1024x768.

I have tried changing the layout settings in Mamewah and the skin settings in Kymaera, but with no luck.  Both FE's crash when I change the settings in the .lay and .skn files.

I'm not sure what else to try...

Any help is most appreciated!  Thanks!!

Your problem doesn't lie in the frontends rather your video card.  It probably doesn't support that resolution.  Also pc's generally don't run in that aspect ratio.  Tv's have "thick" scanlines.  640x480 on the pc side should give you the exact same effect.

I'm not sure what the problem is...as HC said as long as the video card supports that res. (I recall you said it does) then it should work.

Even still MW shouldn't crash, it should just not startup if it thinks the video mode is not available.

Scoobie,
Your video card driver is hardcoded only to recognize the standard windows resolutions (640x480, 800x600, etc).

I am using an ATI AIW 9600 video card (yes, overkill for mame, but was obtained at a screaming rate).  This is one of the cards that works with their component video adapter, which I'm using for my TV.  The only resolution that does not bleed off the screen is 640x432.  I was able to get this res by using the Powerstrip tool.  It does not show up in the Windows settings slider, but does show as one of many selectable resolutions from my ATI taskbar icon.

However, if someone knows of a way to get my component TV to run at one of the standard resolutions, please let me know.  This would make configuring FE's much easier.

With that said, if I have been using this res on my TV, doesn't that mean my video card supports it?  And, if I've been running at this res, it would seem that the layouts/skins for various FE's would run at my specified res, wouldn't they?

Nope.... because powerstrip is a hack of sorts.  All standard methods of changing screen resolution require the resolution in question to be in the windows registry.  It can be hacked in using regedit, but I can't tell you specifically where to add it.
