Donkey Kong is "lame." Tetris is "boring." Space Invaders "needs a superbomb or something." And why play Pong when it's more fun to "jump up and down on one foot"? Hey, save your irate letters--we didn't say this stuff. The nostalgia-nuking commentary is from EGM's November 2003 issue, in which we had kids of the PlayStation generation playtest classic games from the '70s and '80s. Mortified gaming grown-ups wrote in to call it blasphemy--and call these outspoken scamps a name that rhymes with "brittle truckers."

Defender -- Bobby: I've played this on my cell phone.

These kids are to young to even dig deep enough to find out the glory of these games. I'm fairly young (20) but I loved these games ever since I was a kid (well, younger kid)

I was showing my sister a few of the games on Mame and my nephew came in and just started laughing at the graphics and how terrible they were >:(
-
My niece and nephew *love* my MAME cab and the classic games. They are ages 10 and 4, respectively, and they don't have a PS2 or XBox. I'm getting to them before they get ruined by today's graphics. :)

i find that if you put on metal slug, it works for any kid. I had company over and put metal slug 3 on, i had a 11 year old and 8 year old playing it for like 2 hours. they were continuing like mad, but loving it 8)

Notice they liked Gunstar Heroes.
I think the run and shoot formula is too classic to die.

Of course stretching a bunch of games designed for a 19" vertical screen to triple their normal width is gonna make them look like ass.
Or at least that is what they did last time. They had Pac-Man and Donkey Kong and Space Invaders and such stretched out to fill an ultrawidescreen plasma TV. I hope they burned the sucker in real good.
And giving them a whole bunch of games with custom controls (and monitors) and then likely handing them a playstation pad with a USB convertor certainly isn't going to make them look any better.

I'm 14 an i highly respect the retro games like galga space invaders and pacman. but pong to me is just too damn boring! ;)

My little girl is 4. From ages 2 to 3-1/2 she only played with games and programs I had written on my TI99/4A, as well as the commercial education titles also available on this platform.
Mame to her looks stunning. It sounds better and the graphics kick ass compared to the 256 x 192 resolution, 16 colour images she is used to!
Have to have a brag.... Here is my little sweetie!

I have also found that kids up to about 14 also get really excited just getting to play arcade games for free. I had the Junior High sunday school class from my church over for a party last year and every single one played games the entire time. Favorites were Frogger, Out Run, Time Pilot, and Street Fighter 2.

Kids are best on toast, with cheese.

Very sweet little girl Broken.... My 14 year old stepson will only play Metal Slug on my Mame cab, the rest of them pretty much suck to him as well. Can you really blame them all for thinking this way though?
Had I been sitting in my living room as a kid playing Donkey Kong on my 2600 and someone came in and installed an XBox and tossed in Halo 2, I would have soiled myself and then sat there in it playing XBox for the rest of the day.
That being said, I still drift towards the Mame cab as it's a big nostalgia trip and the games are still a TON of fun.

I can imagine a day when the graphics & sound in Halo 2 or Doom3 suck. That's a scary thought.

Hey DK, your not coming onto me are you? There is a definite dearth of backdoor action to be had here. Sure I might be flattered and slightly curious, but I don't go for those back door shenanigans.
You didn't check my other Word-a-DayTM items, or are you just enamored with "dearth"? I think you secretly have a sheep that reminds you of me ;)
I knew you weren't up for it when danny (he was striking out more than Jose Canseco) told me you shut him down....I thought he was gonna hyperventilate or something ;)
p.s. I like that "slightly" thrown in there....you really ARE in bad sorts, aren't ya ;D

You guys always blame the other for the sheep infatuation!
Those Kiwi's are an insidious lot, aren't they? What with all their telling of truth LIES and such ;)
-
Well Ausies and Kiwi's are virtually the same. Just like Americans and Canadians right? ;D

I think we all like games from our time...I'm 16 and don't care that much for newer games like halo, but thats what young kids these days like. When you guys were little , you had pong and pacman, thats what you grew to like. My prime in games was the sega genesis and arcade, so I love Sonic, mortal kombat, nba jam, ect. You like what you grow up on, end of story.
