Post by: dskillz1 on December 10, 2004, 02:11:05 pm
Guys I need some opinions on this.  A friend of mine ordered a premodded xbox with a xenium ice chip from xbox-extreme.com for $269.  My friend failed to check if the xbox was brand new and didnt read the return policy because it was hidden in the "Contact us" section of the webpage. His fault I know.  I proceeded to email xbox-extreme.com interested in also purchasing one:

MY EMAIL
I want to purchase a pre-modded xbox with a xenium ice chip and a 250 gig hard drive from you guys but i need a few questions answered first:

1) Will the XBOX be brand new with the latest motherboard version 6.0?

2) Will the xenium be a genuine Xenium chip or a clone?

3) How long does it take to ship?

Thanks

1)  The xbox will be either brand new or factory reconditioned.  It is beneficial to you for the unit to be factory reconditioned because it will be a motherboard version prior to v1.6.  Earlier versions are more versatile when modded due to problems with the very newest versions.  Factory reconditioned units are

If you open your xbox, the warranty is voided.
If they open your xbox, the warranty is voided.

Therefore, they can't be expected to guarantee MS's hardware once they open it, because they voided the warranty.

They guarantee your installation.
They also guarantee your chip.

He also has a small point about the reconditioned xboxes.  It's much easier and less troublesome to install and operate a modchip on a <1.6 version motherboard.  But they DEFINITELY should tell you if it's new or reconditioned.  Reconditioned xboxes are cheaper, if you get a reconditioned xbox for the same price someone gets a new one for, it's a weak and deceptive pricing scheme.

Yeah the 30 days from ORDER DATE is weak, but.. you don't have many options.
You could try to take action, but good luck, you're buying a modded xbox.

The other option is, go find a used xbox, and install it yourself.  I guarantee you it'll be MUCH CHEAPER, and there are solderless options for xbox modchips (if the motherboard is < 1.6).  You open the case, take out the HD and CDRom, place the modchip, screw down a screw, done.

Go to www.xbox-scene.com and search the forums for testimonials.   I'd do that anyways before ordering.

i know you prolly don't want to hear this
but it's crazy easy to install a xenium ice
so yourself a favor and just buy a refurbished xbox from gamestop and pick up an ice with a no solder adapter
you can catch the set for less than 50 shipped
it took me about 10 min
and that's only cause i was VERY careful pulling it apart
installing a harddrive isn't bad at all either
like the post said above, go to www.xbox-scene.com and they have everything you need to know there
i dunno if the harddrive is worth it though
i'm not sure if they have figured out why people on xbox live are getting banned but they thought it was because of the larger drive
good luck
once you finally get the stupid thing modded it opens the doors to a world of fun things
