im making a cab for someone and they are only going to be playing old 80's games (pacman, galaga, etc.). i have win98 with a 866mhz 128mb of ram machine. video is onboard. what FE should i use? im going to be using the command line version of mame so as to not have any hiccups when running the slower games...or can i use mame32 without any problems on this machine (id rather use mame32 as it is easier to setup)? can i use mamewah with this setup, or is that more graphically intensive depending on the background i use? it will only have about 15 games (thats all she wants) so im thinking something like mamewah is almost overkill. thoughts?

MAMEWAH should run fine on that, even with a very graphical layout. It'll be quick too with only 15 games!

hmm....dos...yeah that would cut down on the legal issues, but what about the ipac and changing the inputs on that if need be? ive already got win98 loaded on the pc, so i guess its windows. but as long as mamewah will run fine on that pc, im good. thanks minwah and lokki.

I'd personally recommend Game Launcher. It sounds perfect for your setup.

Ultrastyle can also look nice, when all the graphics are added and stuff. It is also pretty cool looking and since there are so few games, the list should be pretty easy to manage. Other than that, Mamewah should work just as good. I use it in my cab and LOVE it.

I like how the one you reccomend is your software.
But I'd agree, MAMEWAH is the best FE out there. And its easy to use.

I'd use DOS and ArcadeOS. With only 15 classic games you'd have no trouble fitting everything on a 32mb compact flash card- using a CF card instead of a hard-drive makes updating a cab so much easier, and will boot a lot faster too (depending on the speed of your BIOS checks and your card, the cab should be up and running a game in about 0-5 seconds).

why not use Emulaxian/3d arcade

Umm because it's only 15 games.
Gamelauncher with Dos is the way to go.
Come on guys don't reccomend what fe you like best, reccomend which one is best suited for the job.

hmmm...well i had actually already decided to use game launcher since it was the simplest looking/running yet the best looking for this project in my opinion. i do have win98 installed though....cuz im not all that great with dos. i can run simple commands like changing and making directories, and i know a few others, but setting up dos on this thing will be a pain unless i can get some instructions. i know that the Easy Mame cab or whatever site has stuff like that, but i dont know if its....hmmm....well now that i think about it, all i need to do is make a mame directory, etc. and install sound and video drivers right? anybody direct me to a nice guide to Dos setup for a mame cab?

I only mentioned it in this case since Hulkster wondered if it would run OK...
I'd say the PC spec is ~ borderline dos/Win. I might just choose Windows over dos purely to run my FE (ease). Plus I can hardly remember how to setup dos stuff lately ::)

i think he only recommends his own software because he knows that its the most popular and the most user friendly. if its the best ou there, its hard not to recommend your own stuff. plus, minwah should know by now after all my questions over the past year or so (i guess its been that long) that i use mamewah anyway ;D
-
I was just messing with you, although i'm guessing you could tell I alrady use MAMEWAH anyways.

hehe minwah, I love your fe
Thanks, praise indeed! ;D
Seriously tho I very rarely recommend my FE over any of the others, since I know it is certainly not always the best tool for the job. I tend to list the top cab FE's for those who don't know them, so they can decide for themselves.

hmmm, well i can honestly say that i totally disagree with you.
