Title: (E)? (U)? Which to delete?
Post by: crashwg on November 26, 2004, 05:39:54 pm
I'm going through my N64 Roms and I want to keep just the ones released for the U.S.  So do I want the (E)'s or (U)'s?  at first I thought E=english but then I saw the U's and I thought maybe U=US...  Please help me!  I don't have enough room on my HD for the entire collection.

How about all the rest of the crap?  For instance Cruis'n World has

(U) [!]
(U) [b1]
(U) [b2]
(U) [f1]
(U) [o1]

! is the good one, the rest are various bad dumps and hacks and trainers.

I absolutely HATE the people who made the stupid tools to keep track of the rom versions. I mean now all the BAD DUMPS are copied over and over again ON PURPOSE in order to have a complete set. It is rediculous to download bad dumps of games on purpose.

B = bad dump
a = alternate
f = fixed (a bad dump that someone hacked to work)
h = hack
o = overdump (file is bigger than the actual rom size)
p = pirate (bootleg of a bootleg)
t = trained
T = translation
x = bad checksum (basically bad dump)
! = good dump

So basically everything is bad other than ! and the capital T.

You're my hero Paige!  Where do you find information like that?  I bet wherever it is there's a lot of useful information...

Actually, not all of the others mean bad dumps.  It was my understanding that "a" simply meant an alternative version of the game had been dumped.  "o" means an overdump but all of the correct data is there.  "p" is pirated but that only means that it's a dumped version that was leaked without support of the dumping team.

But when all is said and done, those are practically useless.  I agree with paige, if I want a "complete set," I want a working version of each game available... I have no need for 7 bad dumps/hacks/pirate/overdumps of the same game.

HEAR HEAR.

The bad dump part is especially idiotic. Those bad dumps are copied over and over again so people can be complete. It is stupid. A bad dump is like your eprom reader took a crap. It is useless.

It would be like having 2 mp3 files.

Thriller.mp3
Thriller (bad nasty static with last 40 seconds missing).mp3

What is the POINT?

All the alternate console roms really need to get the BLEEP out of circulation. The only variants that need to be around are E, U, and J.

I think its the "collector" instinct of the community and a large portion of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that keeps this trend going.

I can't agree more though.... get rid of all that garbage.

Console roms are frustrating like Paige described.  If you are wondering where he found the codes visit http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/gtguide.htm#section5

I think some of the hacks and such can be fun.  But, I do only keep the (!) versions of roms.  I was keeping them all till I realized just how much space that took up.
