I just read over at planethalflife.com (http://planethalflife.com) that Half-Life 2 has finally gone gold and should be realeased November 16. I know I will probably rush out and buy it.

You can buy it right now on Steam (http://www.steampowered.com/). If you buy now, you get to play CounterStrike:Source straight away! And you'll be able to play HL2 the second it's available. I've been playing CS:Source over the last few nights and it's fantastic; everything you love about CounterStrike, but in the gorgeous HL2 engine!
Thanks to Valve's Steam distribution system, there's no need to rush out anywhere- great news for couch potatoes!

WHat is STEAM anyway? If I purchase the game, do I download the game or do they mail me the cds? Or do I install the game locally via their servers ?

since sierra folded, the steam app has auto updates, and functional servers.

My problem with it is that I like to own the actual game.

Ok, but if I purchase HL2 via Steam, how do I get the game?

You download it. You can actually already download it. Steam calls it preloading and you don't even have to pay to do it. Most of the game resides on your hardrive waiting to be decrypted when you purchase it after the release date. Another advantage to buying steam is that you get access to some more mods like Half-Life 1: Source and Day of Defeat: Source. I have not ordered it yet. I am kind of old fashioned and like Yander prefer to have a hard copy. Also, there is some monkey business in the Steam License agreement. However, if everything goes smootly, Steam does seem like it could be a promising new delivery method. I just wish it wasn't so expensive and that my humble computer could run the game faster.

Thanks for the break down.
Just wondering the retail version of HL2 will include CS: Source?
As I would like to have a hard copy of the game myself too.

CS source will be included with all copies of HL2 since it is the only multiplayer. I am kind of dissappointed. My friends and I still play HL deathmatch over a LAN from time to time.

Half-Life Deathmatch was pretty good. I used to play bounce for a long time before I got into CS

Maybe I'll finally try counter strike. Seems everyone loves it so much. I guess half life 2 is an added bonus ;)

You've never played Counter Strike??
-
i dont much like online squad games.
-
I think Steam is a good idea, but what the hell? No discount? If I have to pay full price I'll just pick it up at one of my local brick and morters, or even order it online from outpost or gogamer and pay less than full price.
-
I dont have the money to do either. Im probably gonna bootleg it
FIGHT THE POWA!

Bootleg to play single player HL2. But your going to need a bought copy if you want to play online.
It's going to be an expensive month... Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Half-Life 2, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3....

Not with the online Steam verification system Valve is putting into place for HL2. I wonder what kinds of things make Valve want to resort to such a thing?...

Just put my deposit for HL2 at my local EB Games. The release date is now Nov 16, 2004.
