Here are a couple of marquees I made up in Photoshop. I am going with marbles theme on the entire cabinet. Anyone like one of these better than the other, or any other suggestions?
(see messages below for images)
These are just a few smaller JPG's of the full marquee. It's going on my old Bad Dudes mame cab with the rounded marquee.

I kind of like the second one but without characters. Have you considered just modifying the marble madness marquee instead? http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8618 (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8618)

I also like the colouring of the second marquee, but I'm not too fond of the characters. It's hard to have a lot of characters on a marquee and keep the design consistent. The second marquee looks more dynamic and the colours of the lettering match the colours of the marbles better.
-
The second is better. Unlike the others, I like the characters. I think it looks fine if you use similar styled characters from the same era and don't use too few nor too many. Good job.
-
Thanks for the replies. I know there is a real division between those that like characters on the marquee and those that don't. So here is the design with and without.
I agree that trying to keep the characters from the same time period helps. Here are a few more designs I worked on. The characters chosen are the harmless type and not fighters since this is a family machine and will be used by my daughters. Of course, I couldn't resist putting in one Joust character! :P

What if you put the characters inside the marbles.??

I'd like to second that idea. I was thinking it to, but Walls beat me to it.
-
I was going to say keep the characters, but instead of their bright original colours put a blue tint over them, so they blended in with the background a little more, but so you could still see them
-
Ok, here are a few more with the latest suggestions. I think I like the one with the characters in the marbles the best. Thanks for the suggestions.

Yep, perfect compromise.

I really dislike all the *cade names, personally. I'd stick with marble mania.
-
My $.02:
I prefer the "Marble Mania" layouts. SpamMe's right, the "-cade" names are pretty played out. I like the one with the characters in the bubbles a little more than the other (at the moment. I waver back and forth as I keep referring back to them. :) ) Lose Popeye and replace him with either Pac, Dig Dug, Joust. Personally, I'd dump Mario too, as I really don't see him as an "Arcade" character.

i much prefer the second one with the faded blue characters. The first one feels a little too crowded, there are too many marbles... wheres the second one to me seemd more like something i'd see in an arcade ;D
-
Ok, it's down to these two images as the finalists! :)
I will tablulate everyones vote, crumple then up into a little ball and toss them in the trash, and then go with the one I like the best anyway. ;D Just Kidding...let me know what you think.
(see post below for final pic)
Thanks for all your advice!
-
1st one definitely.
-
My vote is for Marquee No. 1. However, I liked the "Marble Mania" logo much better without the bumpy texture, when it faded from green to orange (if I remember correctly).
-
Yeah I am also going with number 1. I think in number 2 the styles clash but putting the characters in the marbles of the first one looks really good.
-
definitly second one for me... first one looks too cluttered :)
-
Yea, I like number one.
Like Robopede said, The text without texture may look better and give it more of an arcade/fun type image...
-
I'll 3rd the opinion to go back to the smooth letters though, and lose the texture. Other than that, these are your best versions yet and I think they're both good.

Any pics of the cab or CP layout?
-
I'll try it tonight without the texture. Is there a standard DPI you send this to a printer in?
150 to 300 DPI and CMYK? This is coming out of Photoshop.
As far as the cabinet or CP layout, I was waiting to get the marquee finalized before I get going on it.
I don't know if I want to mess with building a CP and am thinking about a 2P SlikStik Classic. If that's the way I go, I will add some nice graphics to the CP, but it won't be a full graphic covering the entire thing since I don't want to take it apart.
It will probably be some of the marbles and marble characters printed individually on adhesive vinyl and put on the CP in places where there will be no wear or tear on them. We'll see what happens.
-
Ok, since I designed the first marquees at 72 DPI like an idiot, I have redone the marquee in 300 DPI and made a few slight changes, including the new groovy looking font.
Now to send an 80 meg file out to get printed. Yikes!

I'm sure you're settled and not really looking for opinions any longer ... but here's one anways. :)
I liked the original font much better. This one is less readable and has too much of a 60's feel, which isn't appropriate for an arcade cabinet.
-
yep, liked the other font
-
Ok, ok....you guys are tough! :P
It's never too late to change something! The font can be changed in about 30 minutes, and the more I look at it, the more it seems too 'Austin Powerish".
Thanks for the opinions.

and what exactly is wrong with a 60's influence? ..and who says it's not 'appropriate' for an arcade cabinet.
if it looks good (which it does) ..and if it'll look good in his house (which I'm sure it will) then it's appropriate
dont worry about changing it, unless you WANT to... it looks fine :)

No, No, NO! You must always yield to peer pressure. j/k ;D

I like the new one, Groovy Man!
-
I really like the look of your marquee. I'd personally say stay with the font if you are satisfied with it.
-
Hmmmmm, support for the funkadelic eh? Lets see them side by side please.
