Title: There, they're, their. Your, you're.
Post by: MinerAl on August 05, 2004, 11:37:24 pm
There = a position which is not "here."  i.e. The squirrels are over there.
They're = a contraction of They Are.  i.e. They're going up the tree.
Their = denotes possession by they.  i.e. Their squirrels are after my nuts.

Your = denotes possession by you.  i.e. Your squirrels are after my nuts.
You're = a contraction of You Are.  i.e. You're going up the tree.
ur= in the Bible, the town where Abram was born in ancient Sumaria.  i.e. Abram left Ur and took his squirrels to Canaan.

I read about 5 posts in a row with these same errors and snapped.  I'm a teacher.  I can't help myself sometimes.  I apologize.

It's is not, it isn't ain't, and it's it's, not its, if you mean it is.  If
 you don't, it's its. Then too, it's hers. It isn't her's. It isn't our's
either. It's ours, and likewise yours and theirs.

People who correct grammer are loosers!

That's the one that drives me crazy!  ;)
One of my favorite quotes, from The Simpsons Ralph Wiggum:

That's okay.  I used to yell at my co-worker because she'd ask if she could 'borrow the scissor'.

I don't nitpick about grammar too much but I have a young niece who's falling into bad habits because of a laidback approach to writing on the internet -- including mixing up you're, your, their, there, they're... and also to, too, two.

Edit: fixed spelling of 'grammar' - never said I was a spelling or grammar whiz  ;)

hmmm....when i talk online or post i will say "your" instead of "you're" mainly for the fact that i dont feel like putting the 're on the end of the word....you know what im talking about so its not really necessary.  oh and by the way, you didnt spell "grammar" right....it has an "a" on the end.

He's something that will help you even further: just write 'yor.'  Because everyone will know what you're talking about, and I just saved you from typing another character!

How about a little then and than...I hate that one.

Then = a. at that time   b. next in a series   or   c. in that case

Than = a. indicates a point of departure in a comparison   b. indicates a difference of kind, manner, or identity

eg. If you would rather have your eyes stabbed with cattle prods than listen to any more of this grammar drivel, then skip the rest of this thread.

Oh there's also the common EFFECT/AFFECT confusion.

Effect is a noun - Affect is usually a verb.

i.e.

"Acid spilt on your head will affect your good looks"
"Did you see that guy maimed with acid? That was a cool effect!"

I'll be the first to admit I'm a dork...

agreed, on a forum where you have time and ease of typing proper english, minus your typing skills, is good.  For cell phone, shorten type is great.

I see the "Then/Than" thing way too much, could it be correct grammar in other countries?

Then there's the "You/Your" word usage that some peoples simply don't understand. (Insert you game cartridge in you game console)

I might could fergit if yall'd' pipe down 'bout it.

And speaking of rednex, why do you guys insist on putting toboggans on your head instead of riding them down a snow-covered slope?   ;D

My favorite southern conversation:

Redneck:  You aint from 'round here, are ya?
me:  no, how could you tell?
Redneck:  Yall jess talk too funny ta be from 'round here!
me:  You found me out, Cletus!
Redneck:  Sho nuff!  Have a biscuit.

If you don't object to the object, I would like to subject the subject to a series of subjective objectives.

As long as we are on the subject, if you don't care at all then you COULDN'T care less. I hate when people say they COULD care less. If you could care less, that means you do care some now. The other one is "Can you borrow me a dollar?". I would be lending you a dollar and you would borrow it from me. Plus, I wouldn't BORROW you a dollar anyway! My wife is also really bad with the whole "there, their and they're" and the "to, and too". She does know that two is a number but that is it. I admit I do sometimes mix up then and than but I try.

I once got into a flame war on the Fox 'Arrested Development' boards with some punk who fancied himself captain of the grammar police because I made the heinous error of typing 'your' instead of 'you're'.  He said I was doomed to flip burgers for the rest of my life because I apparently didn't know the difference. (some AD fans think that watching the show entitles them to a PhD in English).

Yes I know the difference.  No, I don't proofread my posts on message boards (it's* not a resume people).  Openly mocking someone over a simple grammer error is a crime far worse than simple gramatical snafus.  It's just good netiquette to let mistakes slide.

(*that reminds me - ITS is possesive and IT'S is a contraction for it is... gets mixed up all the time).
