new NES versus cab -
(http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v249/cthulhu32/Nes%20Cabinet/tkocab_s.jpg)
kind of a big project to start a month before you go back to school, but hey it'll give me something to work on when I'm home every couple of weeks.
here's some more pictures of the cab *the psycho guy with the metal bar is my friend Drew, I'm the one playing it on the other picture*

the Plan -
Take an unwanted Versus NES cabinet, and an old 233mhz pentium, install ArcadeOS and RockNES along with a J-Pac, put a select button for each player on the control panel. On the way the following should be happening - repaint the cabinet and clean up all the gaps with wood putty, install new white t-molding from t-molding.com, replace old controls with japanese balltops that have been sitting around, give it new marquee and monitor plexi, maybe put glass in place of the monitor plexi. Take out that horrid security bar and patch up the holes, patch up all other unwanted alterations, paint weird backdrop black.
Suggestions are welcome, it should be pretty awesome when its all completed.

Update:
Well I switched the versus harness to jamma today, my first cabinet came with a left over jamma harness, and the only way I could get this thing into a j-pac would be with a jamma harness. I know I could have done this whole thing with a vga cable hack and a 2 dollar gamepad, but the J-pac is going to prevent me from hurting the monitor by sending it a high refresh rate.
The DOS computer is also fully setup, a 300mhz Pentium II w/ 64mb of ram, an Nvidia TNT2, a Soundblaster 16 ISA, and a 6gb hard drive, perfect for my needs. I'm running MS-Dos 7.1 on it with an attributes changer and a text editor, so its fully functional. I don't have it currently filled to the brim with the goods, but I have ArcadeOS running Mame and RockNES without a hitch.

PS: if anyone has some extra webspace they wouldn't mind me filling with some html documenting my project *images will still be on photobucket unless theres more than enough bandwidth for them on the site* and can give me a somewhat secure location *aka not login: guest pass: guest* I would very much appreciate it.

You stole my marquee Idea. All well that is what happens in this hobby.
-
LoL! I didn't see that you were working on one. I'm still not sure if I'm going to use the whole Playchoice theme cause I never noticed how evil my cabinet looks when I mock it up black in photoshop. Where did you get the letters for playchoice btw? Is there a font that I didn't find, or did you just copy them from an original playchoice and spurce em up?
-
I just traced the letters in illustrator. Never did find a font similar to it. I guess I should post some pics of my cabinet. It is still a work in progress, doesn't help that I can play games on it now! ;D

Update:
well for the past week I have been repainting my arcade while my parents were gone *had to take up the whole garage* and I tried to match the Donkey Kong orange Nintendo colors as best I could.
I have also picked up a Nintendo Inverter from a guy who lives about 15 minutes away, it works great except for an old pot, but that's an easy fix. I have been having some difficulties with this old computer of mine, because it won't boot unless it thinks there is a pc monitor attached to the vga port *these are before the days of servers, this thing is a 300mhz* so I was talking to the guys on #byoac and HowardC pointed me to an article that was exactly what I need! http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=43&threadid=57778 I emailed Andy if the Jpac would still work with this thing attached and he said its the exact fix he would recommend. So it looks like my cabinet is ALMOST DONE!! All thats left now is cutting the new control panel (shaped like the old), attaching all of the new controls, and adding the the new white t-molding once it gets here *monday!* The new marquee comes later when I have money for the art, but that will be when I come back from college for break.
-
I like the color. What are you going to put on for tmailding? Orange? Blue to contrast? Black to be suttle?
-
Actually I'm going to go with the original nintendo white t-molding. It's coming on monday, and I'll take pictures when that's all installed and going. My dad is going to help me cut the control panel on sunday, for now it will probably be black but when I come back from school for break with a little bit of cash I'll go get a nice NES overlay printed out, same goes with the marquee.
-
Well its pretty much done besides the cp wiring *all I gotta do is push the quick disconnects on*, fixing the remaining two pots on the nintendo inverter, getting AdvMame on there w/ the correct resolution, and finishing up the cp latches *just gotta get the old screws off and pop it on the new cp, and the new marquee/overlay. Those will probably come when I come back for mid-winter break, which is uhhh October I think.
