Title: Toshiba 27A33 -- Too big to fit in Project Arcade cabinet? (eg. LuSiDs design)
Post by: sofakng on June 22, 2004, 11:02:04 pm
I've started constructing my MAME cabinet using the Project Arcade book.  Well, before I started building it I bought a 27" TV (the Toshiba 27A33) based on several recommendations from this forum.

Now it measures as if it will BARELY fit into the cabinet.

Has anybody used one of these TV's in a LuSiD-type cabinet? (or better yet the Project Arcade cabinet?)

Unless it's easy to remove the case from this TV (which I doubt -- and I'm worried because I heard its very very dangerous) I'll have to work out something with this TV...

Any suggestions?

It's not all that dangerous to remove a tv from it's case... you just have to keep in mind not to touch the big sucction cup or the wire coming out of it or the other end of the wire where it attaches to the board.

Are there tutorials on this?

I made the same mistake when I built my first cab. I don't have the money to buy the tv until after I built the cab only to find 27" tv's wouldn't fit and 25" tv's didn't have s-video. So in the end I went with a WG D9200.

Well, I think I paid $200 for this TV because of the smaller size and the fact that it turns itself back on if it looses power (eg. don't need the remote) AND the stays on the same input even after it turns off (eg. don't need the remote).

So, I'd really like to use this TV... In fact I can't return it to the store anymore so I pretty much HAVE to use this TV :)

I did a search but I can't find any tutorials for removing a TV case... Can anybody help me out with this?

If I use rubber gloves (do I need any certain kind?), will I be protected from the anode's voltage?

If you haven't started construction, you could modify LuSids plans slightly to get the extra space needed.  It would just be a matter of widening the sides by a bit and also changing the base and tv shelf.  It shouldn't be that tough.  You might also see if you can reduce the distance between the tv screen and the glass/plexiglass cover  (Don't make them touch however as it could cause scratching).

I have already started construction... In fact, it's almost complete.  So my only option is to buy another TV and loose $200 or I can take the case off the TV and make it fit.

I'd much rather option #2.

The TV should *barely* fit WITH the TV cover on, so if I take it off it should fit perfectly.

Is this a viable option for me?

If it does barely fit now I don't see what the problem is. Can't you just put a large, slow, quiet fan in there and put a few extra vents into the back and side?

Well, I didn't actually put it in the cabinet yet, but from what I've measured, it might be too tight of a fit width-wise... Also the TV is too depth for my tastes (too close to the front of the cabinet).  If I can remove the case to push the TV back some more it would be a big help.

Plus, if I take the case off I can then buy a bezel to cover all of the other inside components.

I've got that tv in a lusid cab myself :)

I did adjust the width by about 1/2 an inch or so (it has been a while) to make it fit a little better - the only thing to do would be to try it.  Mine basically just fits depthwise with enough room for the plexi and happs bezel.

I did the same on my 2nd cab I added 1 inch to it, that did it.

Why don't you just modify the cabinet size?  Make it an inch wider and it sounds like it will fit perfect.
