I am starting a cocktail cabinet and have done some searching and even bought the new book from Borders. I have a Viewsonic 19" Flat screen monitor I want to use for my cab. What do I look for in distortion effects to see if it will be a problem. I will sit it upright on the desk for awhile before finishing the design on the cab. I couldn't really find alot on this.
Thanks,
Denis

i installed a 17 inch dell monitor in my cocktail cab and i just put a board right under the monitor and some at the top of the cab right level with the top of the monitor "the screen" to make it stable

It really wasn't the how to mount the monitor that was puzzling me. I have read about magnetic distortion and weird stuff about the earths magnetic field and the such. It seems that some monitors are going to be subject to color distortion effects from these things. I wanted to know what to look for before I commit to putting this 19" monitor into this project. My thoughts were to sit the monitor on it's back for awhile and see what happens but I'm not sure what to look for in the distortion.
Thanks,
Denis

Thats reasurring to know. I was planning on using shielded computer speakers for my cab so I wouldn't anticipate that as being a problem. For now I will continue with my plans on using the 19" viewsonic monitor and start collecting the controls and encoder. As it is this project will easily run my the next 6 to 8 months to get through. Will be on here alot during that time reading.

Welcome to the board, b. From what I understand, most problems experienced with monitors occur if they are moved while they are running. Usually degaussing will take care of any minor issues, and most monitors auto-degauss at startup. So if a monitor is put into position before turning it on, there should be little concern for it. There are exceptions to every rule, but I think you'll be fine. From my experience, Viewsonics are very reliable monitors.

Thanks Alan, I've been working in computers for 17 years and never had to move a monitor into the vertical position before so this is all new territory for me. I am just hoping to be able to finish the cocktail cab sometime soon as it would make playing my favorite games just that much easier.
