Title: Bartop arcade, updated pics
Post by: bishmasterb on June 03, 2004, 12:41:36 am
My latest project is a series of 3 tabletop arcade cabinets based on early Namco games. The MsPac cab has a Celeron 400 PC running MAME32; the Galaga cab has a PSOne usually running Namco or Williams greatest arcade hits discs; and the PacMan electronics are not yet fully decided.

The PacMan has a single 4-way; the Galaga has dual 8 ways; and the MsPac has an 8 way and an angled/isometric 4 way for Q*Bert and CongoBongo.

They still need some finishing touches obviously; I'll hopefully have them completed in a week or two.

The MsPac cab has a 15" PC monitor; Galaga has a 13" television; and PacMan will likely have a 13" television as well.

The cabinets are all identical in dimensions, about 30" tall, 16" wide and 22" deep.

I've got two more identical cabinets (no electronics, one is black and one is yellow) that I might be interested in selling/trading. If anyone is interested, PM me.

Too true, I have an old 14" Amstrad colour monitor in my attic  ::)

They do look great, me and a mate were just talking about making a small machine for his VW split-screen van - could be colour-coded to match his paint job etc....

Nice work there, they look cool as a set. Now I just need a reason for building one... maybe it's time my friends get their own cabs!

The controls don't exactly fit the artwork huh? I really wanted a cab with dual 8-ways so I can play Robotron; and since the PacMan cab already had a 4-way, I didn't want two cabs with only 4-ways.

I have plans drawn up in Autocad. I'm considering building kits for wholesale distribution. If I don't go through with that, I will post the plans online.

What sort of costs would the kits run?  I've been interested in something like this since you posted the Tron cab.

We're hoping to sell a kit that all you would need to add would be the monitor and CPU/console. Retail priced somewhere around $250-300.

I'd be curious to know how important the licensed artwork is to you though. What additional value would the cabinet have if it had full marquee/cpo/side artwork as opposed to generic artwork?

Personally, I think $300 is too much for such a small cabinet. You can buy a cocktail kit from arcadedepot.com starting at just $195, and there seems to be a lot more to it. I guess it depends on what you are including besides the cab itself.

I would consider one of these for like $150 barebones.

Best of luck to ya!  8)

OMG, it's the invasion of the mini cabs!  8)

I just saw PacFans MiniPac MKII (http://pacfan69.tripod.com/cabinets/id8.html) and now these 3. PacFans machine is a bit more complete (with sideart and bezel and all), but these 3 look nice too.

I'll probably make a Galaga minicab myself (one step up from my microcab (http://arcade.laweb.nl/PocketGalaga/)) if my kid is a bit bigger, but I'd go for a version with a full CPO (running along the top and front)

Hey Bish,

Did you ever decide if you were going to market these as kits or are you going to post the plans? I went to your website but didn't see anything about them.

Have not found the time to lock down the licensing or the manufacturing yet.

I will post the plans if I decide not to proceed. Sorry, that's the best answer I can give.

Are you going to share the plans for your table top cabs?

Freaking awesome.

I also think $300 is too much.  I realize you would have a lot of work if you cut/route these kits out.  I would suggest seeing if you can get them CNC'd or something to save on labor.

I would pay $150 for the wood cut out and the t-molding routed.  Sanding and everything else would be easy for most people to do.

Bish, have you ever considered making a mini driving cab?  Keeping to the Namco theme, Pole Position would be kinda cool.  You could possibly use the mini-steering wheel that ezarcadesolutions.com sells, but not sure about the other controls (gas, shift).  Maybe use the Jakks unit that plays Pole Position instead of Mame?.

I dunno.  Just thinking of ways to express my ideas using your skills.   ;D

I think that's a great idea. I briefly considered doing a Pole Position cab a while ago, but didn't give it too much thought. The only thing I can think of for a gas pedal setup would be to use a PC style gas pedal on the floor. I don't think Pole Position had a break pedal, did it? Although you might want to include a break pedal to open it up for other driving games.

Interesting idea...I may have to follow up on that.

Its a great addition to this community.
