Title: WinTools stuffing up my PC, help.
Post by: Apollo on May 19, 2004, 08:02:35 pm
I downloaded Mozilla last night just fro the web site building tools and I now have a process running called WinTools.exe. It is sucking the life out of my CPU and I can't remove it. I have uninstalled Mozilla and deleted a couple of wintools apps from add/ remove programs but it is still there. I have run Adaware and Norton but no use, help, this thing has my CPU running at 100% usage so all my apps run too slow to even use.

Just out of curiousity, why didn't you download Mozilla from mozilla.org?

A quick Google search for remove wintools.exe turns up a few places to get started.

It could be spyware:

It could be a virus:

It could be something AdAware doens't find yet.

Well I just happened to have the CD lying around and I wasn't connected to internet at the time.
Thanks for your help I have it sorted now, I was able to remove most of the files and although some cannot be deleted I have disabled the process so no probs.

try this
(i reccomend you get hijack this! before going through these steps)

1.. boot into safe mode (if its xp/2k, hit f8 during the boot process)
2.. go: start ->run-> regedit and hit enter
3 go to hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run
4. right click on wintools and delete the entry.

run hijack this, and look for the following entries:

o2 - bho: (no name) {8776247-311c-43b4-8499-3d5fec94a183} c :\progra~1\common~1\Wintools\Wtoolsb.dll

o2 - bho :(no name) {63b78bc1-a711-4d46-ad2f-c581ac420d41}c :\progra~1\common~1\Wintools\Wtoolsb.dll

after you remove those....
open up my computer.. and go to c:\program files\common tools\wintools  and delete the folder

reboot your machine to regular mode, and verify the folder was deleted

good luck
