Title: Dreamcast Quantum Fighter Hack
Post by: ceege on May 11, 2004, 01:56:06 pm
I have been looking all over the 'net for info on how to hack this pad.

Basically, I've got every button working except for L & R, which use pots -- is there any way that I can get these to work as an arcade microswitch.  I've heard of people using just two wires, or using the AstroPad version and putting all 3 on the microswitch -- neither of these work -- yes, they make the button fire (resulting in a punch or kick or whatever) but they also make the character jump or duck, and thats not acceptable.)

Any help is appreciated!  Thanks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn' t the QFP (Quantum fighter pad) have C and Z buttons that are just digital versions of the L and R buttons?  And if so, can't you just ignore the L and R buttons, since you're trying to make them behave digitally?

Aside from that if I'm reading what you wrote correctly, when you hook up all three wires you're getting a joystick motion and a button press?  Can you determine if the joystick motion is from the d-pad or the analog stick?

The C and Z buttons are 'programmable' but not the same -- in SF3, they act the same as A and X.

The reason it's jumping (as I figure) is that both the analog stick and the L & R buttons use the same ground and same signal, but the potentiometers they use control the voltages so 1-1.2v would be Up, 1.3-1.5v would be Down, and so on

I could be wrong on that .. but thats what it seems like.

Easy guide:

1) Take note of the position of the pot when you fully depress L or R.
2) There should be two wires running from the pot to the circuit board. Cut one of the wires (doesn't matter which one).
3) Solder both ends of the cut wires you to a microswitch.
4) Set the pot to the position you observed at step 1.
5) Enjoy!

It's really that easy.

It's really that easy.

So from what you're saying, the POT should still be connected?  Also, there are 3 wires .. 1 is ground, 1 seems to be some reference point and then the 3rd is the difference, telling the controller that the button is depressed.

If there are three wires, one is probably not used. If you can't really tell which one, just cut the one connected to the middle terminal on the pot.

If all else fails, you could measure the resistance of the pot where the button is depressed with a multimeter set to Ohm. Before doing doing this, be sure to disconnect the pot from other circuitry. When the resistance is know, chuck the pot and just buy the nearest resistor and put that in series with the switch.

I finally figured this one out, and I tested it to work fine.
