Why not restore the Centipede, sell it, and MAME a less desirable machine? I'm sure you could make some money on the deal and not kill a classic.
-
The Centipede Machine is Dead.
It would cost way to much to fix it up. And I already have it sold after I turn it into a MAME Machine, and Im keeping the Original Marquee and side Art on the Machine. But im Making a KILLER Profit. So im Happy. I Only paid 50$ for the Broken Centipede anyway.
Well, sorry to hear that this is about money for you.
Me.. Im a gamer and just love the original look and feel of the cabinet.

Do you have the original graphics and stuff for the ddragon machine?

So what if it is about the money? Someone can't enjoy a profit? That elitist attitude doesn't ripen the appeal of keeping arcade games vintage.

Looking at that Centipede it would cost a maximum of $175 to get it working, and it would be worth AT LEAST $600 then.
Not very smart if you are doing this for money.

I drop $1500+ into the Machine to make is a MAME Machine that plays over 6000+ Games Including Centipede. And I can sell it for 4000$ Or More.. So you do the Math. ::) When I am done iwth the Machine, Maybe this weekend, I will post more pics...
Actually, I just did the math and dumping $175 into a $50 cabinet to sell for $600 produces a higher gross profit margin than dumping $1500 into a $50 cabinet to sell for $4000. The ratios are close, but you would actually be better off selling multiple $600 machines that require $225 invested in them than one $4000 machine that requires $1550. That isn't factoring the cost of labor, though I would assume that the $175 worth of fixes would take significantly less time than the complete MAMEing (maiming) of the machine.
Also, the value of the Centipede machine appreciates, while the MAME machine has nowhere to go but down...
But hey, that's just me getting nit-picky again... ;)

A MAME Machine will never go down in Price since you can keep adding more and more games! How many times can you and friends play Centipede before getting bored. With over 6000+ Games party's at my house are NEVER boring!! When I had the Double dragon machine working in its original form it was fun a few times then no one touched it. When I turned it into a MAME machine it was always on when friends were over. And all they do is play the MAME Machine. Playing a Atari 2600 Emulator on a 20 VGA Screen is fun, And also playing an Old NES Game ect... Some people like to rebuild Cars into there original form, and some CHANGE the original car and make it different and cool. So to each there own. I do not Build the Machine's to just sell them! I do not post them anywhere for sale. BUT if someone I know wants to buy it, then Fine, I will build another one. I do it for FUN, not for a Profit. That's why I will keep my day job. There will always be people who would NEVER want to change the Original Arcade machine, and some who like to change it. To Each his own.. :) But a Car or an Arcade machine at the Dump will never live again...
Keeping to your car example, look at the difference in the value of a stock '57 Chevy vs one that has been customized. That's all I'm trying to point out to you. MAME machines decrease in value while originals increase because of the simple laws of supply and demand. The number of MAME machines is always increasing, while the number of originals is decreasing. As more Centipede machines get chopped up to make MAME machines, the value of the remaining Centipede machines increases due to scarcity.

How in the heck is it even POSSIBLE to dump $1500 into that cabinet to mame it?
My build costs on a cabinet that size are usually around $400-$500, and I sell them for around $900.
Anyway, I stand by my statement that it is foolish to use that cabinet. Bring it over to my house and I will give you three better candidates for it.
I don't usually mean to be insulting, but this single post shows every single thing that is wrong with the Mame community, and every single thing that gives us a bad name.
Tearing up perfectly good complete classic machines.
Insanely overcharging people for a 19" conversion cabinet. My 19" conversion cabinets are well under $1000, and I am a very experienced builder, I don't just graft someone elses premade panel onto a machine.
Grafting an incorrectly sized control panel onto a machine.
Covering the results in arcade clip art.
Sorry buddy, but I don't see you as any different than those losers who go to the auction and buy every cheap game in sight in order to part them out.

Easy, tiger...I don't think it's the community that has this problem, just a few select individuals.
Could be worse...he could have MAMEd a Three Stooges cabinet.

I guess that's why it's pronounced "maim"

I think there are times we classics lovers have to bite our tongues. Nobody can understand the pain I go through when I see a stargate cab mamed. When I have every part to restore one even an NOS bought in 91 overlay. As long as someone is not hurting others we can't tell someone what to do with their personal property.
