Ok, here are a few pictures of my dirt caked Stunt Cycle.
-
Frontal view.
See the right handle, that is the throttle, and it is the ONLY control. You don't even steer in Stunt Cycle.
-
i remember that game. i used to flip over in teh tunnels. too much throttle
-
Hi, my name is Art, and I loved to play Stunt Cycle.
There, I said it.
-
nice..
take some pics with your arcade games actually running if you can.
Also, some digital cameras have a life usage counter. Wonder how high yours will get once you're done "documenting" your collection. ;D

Hee hee, if it ran, then I would. At any given time at least half my games don't work. That is because I keep selling working games and buying dead ones.

More pics, now that I have cleaned it.

Wow, it's almost like I'm back in the old Starlight Skating Rink...Elton John is blaring "Tiny Dancer" over the static clouded ill cared for speaker system. I lay my quarter on the machine anticipating my first game of Stunt Cycle--spurred on by the "authentic" motorcycle sounds and "realistic" graphics. But David Reynolds...cruel David Reynolds has other plans. He lays his oversized hand over my my last quarter; smiles his beautiful, evil, Donnie Osmand grin; and brushes me to the floor with his free arm. I collapse into a tangled pile of flesh and skates...at the feet of Danielle--beautiful, sweet Danielle. The girl next door...the girl I am sure will be the mother of my children. I fall...and she...she Laughs! She laughs at my humilliation...at my pain. And a thousand cracks shatter my mind, sending splinters through my soul, ripping gouges through my personality...that will never heal! And so I pull into myself. I cut myself off from humanity...I turn to machines for comfort. And with the comming of the internet I find a social life...hidden behind a screen. Safe from the pain and humilliation that comes with personal contact. I sit here typing this a shattered broken man and all because of Stunt Cycle! :(
-
Well, they did have it at the skating rink...I may have exagerated some of the other stuff. ;D
Cool cab, btw!

Ok, last night after testing my City Connection boards I decided to make another attempt to get my black and white games working.
After a fruitless hour on the basketball (switched the transistot? inside the heatsink and tried a different big blue to no effect), I decided to take a GOOD look at the Stunt Cycle board.
On the Stunt Cycle board I found a cut trace. It looked like it was cut from some sort of impact, rather than on purpose (Stunt Cycle is a nasty boardset to work on, since it has a TON of factory modifications, lifted chip legs and blue wires). So I jumpered that, and now the game is playing blind. Well, not BLIND, the monitor is just displaying a single vertical line.
-
Nice! What a find. Keep checking the board. Where there is one cut trace, there may be more.
-
Game is working as of today. Tested it with another monitor (23" model), recut the cut trace that I had "fixed", then noticed that some kind of animal had chewed up some of the wires on the Stunt Cycle monitor, fixed that, now it is working great.
-
Another pic.
Still have to do a few things. The throttle is not smooth, and is missing the spring, it needs new handgrips, and the coin door needs a repaint, and it could still use a capkit due to some minor flagging of the monitor.
-
G-G-G-Ghetto!!
-
Wow, that is crazy cool. Total retro.
Is it any fun to play? I can't imagine that a single button would be exciting, but hey, pong just moved back and forth.
If nothing else, that thing is awesome in the sense of it's age. It is probably older than me!
-
Yeah, it is really fun actually. It doesn't really use ANY buttons, it just uses a throttle.
My friend Dave (pictured) has already tied the world record.
-
Close up of the score.
This is the MOST possible, the game ends after you jump it, regardless of lives left.
-
Now you should make an emulator for this so it can be included in "No Name Mame". I loved this game as a child and it kills me that there are tons of emulated games and this one is not included.

IIRC this game does not use ROMs, so it can not be emulated.
-
Yeah, I know ..... I thought Pong was the same way but that was in No Name Mame. Oh well, lets just hope someone write the game from scratch then since it is very fun to place....... :>)

Simulated is the word I believe ;)

Yep Great Game.. I showed my mame cab to a friend I hadn't seen in ten years and he kept going on about this motor cycle game he played...Much pondering and I worked it out to be Stunt Cycle...No mame emulation he was most dissapointed...Alas the simplest things in life are often the best!!

when i look at mame without the roms, arent i looking at emulated hardware? surely then since a motherboard on say, berzerk has been emulated then a motherboard like stunt cycle can be emulated. just that in stuntcycles case, you dont need to get a rom it will just work (which would be why the mame crew wouldnt emulate it. a legal, rather than a technical reason)
edit: damn fine cab (",)

Way to reply to a 2 year old thread!

No, that's not it at all. These don't have any structure like a CPU or anything like that. They are all pure TTL, which basically means, that in order to "emulate" it, you'd REALLY have to "emulate" it by basically emulating the functionality of each component of the board and then figuring out exactly how they are all tied together.
An entirely different concept than, say, dumping the ROMs for Berzerk and then emulating the CPU.

It was a bit old but a good one!

so? you aren't just emulating the CPU. surely you have to emulate the whole motherboard, all functional electronics would need to be emulated. so if you have a circuit diagram for stuntrider it really shuldnt be that hard- you can easily emulate different individual components. the diagram tells you how to connect them together....
-
But the purpose then is entirely different.
When you emulate Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, all you are emulating is the CPU and its support chips. You are not actually emulating the game. You are using the actual roms, and in theory, emulating the CPU is done to make sure that the ROMs work as dumped.
To emulate a true TTL game, you would have to emulate the board, which in turn emulates the game itself, which is not the stated purpose of MAME.
In other words, you are welcome to do it yourself, but don't expect a MAMEdev to do so.

yes, yes. we are talking two different things. i imagined people thought it wasn't PHYSICALLY possible. what you are saying is that morally the MAME team wont do it. im just saying it CAN be done. doesn't have to be the MAME team. who cares WHO does it? Bill gates, Bill Cosby, Billy Crystal. i propose that ANYONE named Bill should be able to do it! Bill Hicks woulda fer sure...
edit: somewhere along the line SOMEONE dumps the ROMS. without which MAME has no purpose. Surely one of THOSE guys would be technically minded enough to do it AND be named Bill?
edit edit:
looking at the schematic of stunt cycle lists two ROMS in the parts list. one for the motorcycle and one for the motorcycle and bus, and one for the score translator. thus:
"Why none of these games are emulated:
Old games such as Pong didn't use microprocessor ROMs but circuits so emulation of the actual circuits is needed to get the games in MAME. This is also why Pong doesn't need ROMs in MAME.
From Phil S:
There's no reason these couldn't be simulated and run under a MAME-like cross-platform framework, to the point where users would be unable to discern any difference. Many of them use ROMs for graphics and in-game data."
hmmm, might change my name to Bill and learn more (",)

Stunt cycle is one of my original favorites.
I had to pick up the Atari home box version just to get a fix some moons ago but it just isnt quite the same as the original stand up.
-
Okay, so, to be as simplistic as possible about it:
Stunt Cycle is not available in MAME because it wouldn't actually NEED MAME if emulated.

well, i was originally commenting on peales comment about it not using roms and thus couldnt be emulated. true, he may have meant it cannot be emulated in mame. on its own im saying that comment probably isnt true.
however, if we talk about mame again (which i wasnt originally) then maybe stunt cycle COULD run on mame...
without knowing about how mame actually works i cant know myself if this is true. i would have imagined any motherboard could (technically speaking) be emulated within the framework. ok, so stunt cycles motherboard doesnt have an actual cpu. i dont know if within mame, it HAS to have a cpu, ram, clock etc emulated. dragons lair is emulated but of course it wont work in mame because there is no laser disk. if the framework is quite loose on what kind of motherboard can be emulated then i dont see why (theoretically as opposed to morally) the stunt cycle motherboard could be emulated. there are still roms for stunt cycle. true they are for graphics only as opposed to game code, but i cant imagine there is some 'dungeons and dragons' kinda rule that says (in deep scary voice) "thou shalt not have a rom unless it contains game code!" and also "ye shalt not have a motherboard that also is the game"
like i say, i dont know how mame is put together. does it consist of an invariable number of 'lego' pieces the difference of which is only speed and number of pieces (like cpu- how many, how fast, clock-what speed, ram-size etc) or is each piece crafted exactly after the original motherboard maybe with some pre-designed pieces ready to go (like the ubiquitous z80 processor). to me its just one sort of piece of electronics compared to another. surely all the electronics of say 'scramble' are emulated- any caps, resistors, transistors etc would need to be 'there'. so the stunt cycle would just happen to not have a cpu and happen to have many more transistors, caps and resistors...
i dunno. poor paige must be getting annoyed at seeing his old thread staying up here. he probably doesnt even have the cab anymore! i might post this question in a different section.
edit: wasn't pong in one of the earliest versions of mame?

Yup, it's in v.36. I played it 2 days ago.

You do realize those "ROMs" you speak of are not even Atari cartridge sized? They're basically bitmasks on a chip. I wouldn't be surprised if those chips only hold a few bytes. These are the earliest of the early PCB designs using the earliest memory ICs out there. You could hold that information with a pencil and index card if there were a way to access that from a PCB line.

well, get that paper and index card out and start writing! this needs to be emulated! i just GOTTA play it (",)
i dunno chad. i thought you were AMERICAN? where's that 'instead of asking why? i ask why not?' can-do attitude? whip it good!
-
I could do it, yes.
I do not want to, no. That game would actually be a very good intro to coding project. It would be much easier to write from scratch than to truly emulate that board and wouldn't take much effort to do from scratch.
