Title: Illustrator Help
Post by: jedimason on April 06, 2004, 11:35:35 pm
I've been messing with Illustrator's free trial the past week and need some help from some of the experts on this board.

First I can't seem to figure out how to make the letters two different colors.  One top half and one bottom half.   Like the Galaga marquee.

Second,  does anyone have a pic of the mspacman that is sitting on the letter.  I downloaded the marquee from the vector library, but can't seem to just crop out mspacman.

Here's a link to an example of what I'm trying to do.

Thanks for any help you give me

The two colors are accomplished with the gradient tool. You need to create convert the type to outlines in order to fill it with a gradient. Select the type with the black arrow (so there's a box around it) and from the type menu select "create outlines" (or cmd+shift+O on a Mac or alt+shift+O on a PC ... I think.)

I don't think he's talking about a gradient.... He's talking 2 tone.

1. You have to convert the text to outlines.

2. You have to set the top color.

3. You have to duplicate the text. Set the second color, then either mask, or delete half of the text.

For a newbie... this stuff might be tough to figure out... especially if you are having trouble deleting parts of artwork. You might try the illustrator tutorial
