I seem to be a little out of the loop, I was hoping to get some clarity here..
I keep hearing how certain ROMs (mostly gambling and newer ROMs?) are being purposely left out of Mame support. I know that the gambling games are not technically arcade games, so I can understand that.
I have hypothesized that the newer games have some retail 'value' and are being left out so as not to draw attention to Mame. Is that about right, or is there something else going on? Is there any other reason the team would exclude a game?
(Hopefully I haven't crossed some line by asking. If I have, I will understand if the mods delete the post.)

It is real simple.
Put a hot current game in Mame, and then arcade ops will be able to use Mame for the game rather than shell out all the cash for the kit. If that started happening, then it would be bad for us.

I agree with the MAMEdevs practice of excluding recent but workable ROMS, but with all of the "reunion" and "retro" cabinets becoming popular, operators are probably doing this with those systems anyway. However, the games are still making enough wads of cash for the manufacturers that they are churning them out by the truckload now.
What're there, like, 5 different "retro" systems now?
Ms.pac/Galaga
Centipede/Missile Command
Space Invaders/Qix
Ultracade
Multi-Williams
My point? I don't think I have one.....

ok i understand they made up their little rules to go by , which previously was no games less than 3 years old. so then 2001 rolls around and they decide not to release the new games, no pubic statement on this. a few message board posts that got locked/deleted. and its this big hush hush thing and god forbid you ask on the MAME boards they will flame you for 2 pages.
whats the deal with that crap

They probably got sick of all the ungrateful knobs asking for new roms all the time, and then when told anything after such-and-such date wouldn't be released, they cry like little girls.
The moral of the story? Be happy with what you have and be happy when you get something new, why cry about the rest unless you are willing to start coding them yourself?

Goes to show: people are never happy.
You have a library of thousands of real arcade games to play at your leisure.. ... but because <insert favorite game> isn't in MAME I'm pissed.
Be happy with what you have, because it's amazing to begin with.
-
I dont care if they release another ROM, Sure there are games that I would love to have on my Cab. But damn I couldnt be more happier with all the games I have. Moral of the story..
Be happy with what you got
and
Be happy when someone you dont know works their ass off for us to get us a new game.(even if its not a game your interested in)

yeah i mean its cool that these guys do this for free. (dont even make me get into what kind of social lives they must have lol) but theyre always trying to make themselves sound so politicly correct, like "the main purpose of MAME is to document the games" seriously if someone approached you asked if you wanted to spend a lot of time, and money in some cases on just documenting something, you would be like oh man that sounds badass lets start now. they obviously wanna play the games but since a lot of them are obviously older and are biased to classic games, they dont really care they have their fav games to play.
personally i love pacman and all that crap but i cant play them for an hour striaght like you can with some newer games. i dunno what my point is though.... it just seems wrong in some way that they have the work done and theyre just purposely not releasing it. its not gonna cause this massive shockwave cause now everyone can play metal slug 4...

It will if Nazca (the maker of Metal Slug according to KLOV) starts losing money because of it. No one in our community can afford lawyers to fight off these companies. One angry publisher could easily shut down the burners.
I am beginning to see why this is so rarely discussed openly. :-X

yeah but where the hell can you play metal slug 4 in the arcade?? does anyone have a arcade with it near them? seriously. i dont think theres one in NJ
-
I can play metal slug 2 accross the street in the luandromat. ;D

What are you, 5? They'll release it when it appears that it isn't a moneymaker and when they damn well feel like it. There's only another 4000 games to play, is that not enough?
Three whines in the same subject is getting old.... start working on the code and compile it yourself if you want it so bad.

I for one am happy whith what I have. I really only enjoy the classics, and a very few newer games. In anycase they're doing it all for free, and passing it around to anyone who can click a mouse button. I've been useing emulators since about '96 and have heard just about every gripe about it since. I can't imagine why anyone would ---smurfette--- about getting free games, let alone free thousands of free games. For me it's not because they are free it's because I enjoyed them in arcade and can now enjoy them again. What ever the reason is that you may have to complain about it's not enough. It's pointless. Just enjoy what you have! :)

no pubic statement on this.
Tee hee hee :)
Personally I think they should make a cast iron rule and not allow anything newer than 5 years old into MAME. At the very least. Most of these new games either won't run full speed on a PC anyway, or are crap, or both...
-
I agree--the old addage about not looking a gift pacman in the mouth applies here.
From google search:
Meaning
Don't be ungrateful when given something.
Origin
A horse's age can be estimated by checking how worn its teeth are.

I'm for one VERY HAPPY to find mame...

you want to play new games... go insert soem tokens / quarters / dollar bills in one of those arcade !!!...
I'm happy with the thousands of games I can play now...

Lest I get painted with the 'ungrateful' brush, I would like to state for the record that I am quite happy and grateful for the incredible selection of old games that are available. I just asked the original question because I was interested in the fact that no one seemed to ever discuss the newer games. Like it was some great dark mystery or something.
So long as Centipede, Tempest, and Stargate are available, I am a happy man. :D

Am I the only one that would love for the MAME team to stop adding games and features and just work on perfecting the games currently emulated?

Yes ;D
Seriously though. I would like to play some of the new Golden Tee, Racing, or Motorcycle games in a few years.

No, I for one would like to see the same...but like we shouldn't whine about not adding new games we shouldn't moan about this. Devs stop working on or don't start working on a certain game/driver/bug/whatever probably for a reason - maybe they got sick of it or the bug just beat them, who knows...besides, have you seen how many bugs there are!? www.mametesters.com
Of course I personally would never let a piece of my programming out with bugs ::) :D

There is nothing stopping you from buying Golden Tee for the PC or to pop in a Dreamcast (or other console) into your cabinet to play more recent arcade games.
Or was is that you really ment to say you wanted to play these for free via mame?? ;D Truth be told.

You mean I can play them on my PIII 450 DOS box? Where do I get those games? Please post a link! ;D

Golden Tee PC was released on 333's. I have played the PC version (ebay - $6) on a 200 mhz.
I don't like driving games, so I don't know about them.
Somebody has to buy some of the games sometime, or there won't be any.
IF mame were to completely stop development now, I'd be happy for years and years to come with what is there today. If adding new games risks what we have, then I agree, we sholdn't push it anymore.
I think that some people have already released commercial versions of machines with a mame engine, and it's just disguised. I look for it all the time. I saw a machine being sold by some asians that played 50 games off some small box made in mylaisia. The pacman version booted like mame does. Things like this will stop mame.
