Title: Worst thing, while playing
Post by: 2600 on March 30, 2004, 04:03:36 pm
What's the worst that happened to you while playing?

Suppose this could be a interpreted a couple of ways.

This one has been stuck in my head for ages.  My sister and I were playing Ikari Warriors on the NES all day long.  We got to some stage where there are a bunch of tanks in a hallway.  Well she was at the bottom of the screen and I advanced the screen so that she got stuck behind the tank and couldn't move.  There were no enemies and needless to say nothing to kill her with, so Game over.  That sucked.

There I was playing the Unreal Tournament mod called Strike Force, I'm the last player alive on my team that round, all my team mates are watching in ghost mode, and then... the power goes off. I'm just sitting there in the dark... what happened- am I dead now?

My contacts don't quite fit right, and I rarely blink while playing.  So, often times I'll lose my lens (it either pops out, or folds up under my eyelid) right in the middle of a boss battle in my shmup-du-jour.  On my last life, with no continues, and no pause button.

It also happens on DDR just as I'm about to AA a song.

I'm playing Street Hoop on my mame cabinet - with Chicago team of course :).  Trying to win the championship on one "quarter".
While playing my two year old gets on the player two controls and starts whackin' buttons.  No problem, cuz there are no extra "credits".  And he can't pause or exit game without using "shift" button.  So I let him act like he's playing too.  If he hits the credit button, I'll take him off the chair.
I get to the finals and jump out to a big lead, so I thinks its money in the bag.  Well just before halftime I see the "Player 2 is joining in message" (or something like that).  WTF!!!
To my horror, the game was set to freeplay so all it took was him hitting 2p and he was in.  So, after gathering myself, I conclude that I'll play the two player game out, have the lead at half, and then continue on with my single player game.  Noting that I am still on same credit.
Well what do you think happens?  Yup, the AI jumps on me and takes a halftime lead, which would force me to use another credit to continue.
I was so distraught that I simply exited the game.
(Damn that was a long story),

Knowing that I could finish a alot of games w/Unlimited credits/continue (TMNT,SIMPSONS,MSLUG Series) I wish I was young again with only 4 quarters in my pocket  :)

Playing bubble-bobble for an hour, only to have your girfriend hit the start2 button at the same time you hit start1. Start1+Start2=Escape. :(

Yep.. The Start1+Start2 is the worse, especially when you've been playing a game for a couple of hours....

Another one is:  When playing Gaunlet or some other 4 player games with 3 or 4 players... and since there's unlimited quarters.  Someone usually would jacks up their health to some crazy amount.  And then they decide they don't want to play anymore...  Which ends the game for everyone else, because it takes you an hour for that person to die off.

playing Super R-Type on the SNES...  finally make it to the pro level (this game was insanely hard).  I made it to the final level and was doing some heavy duty piloting when my brother comes in, trips, and kicks the SNES which of course resets itself when it gets a good enough bump.  Talk about frustration!

Me and a mate were playing Majestic 12 (can't remember the full name, Super Space Invaders 91?).  Anyway we'd been playing for AGES and I think one of us inserted a coin (just a credit button) and the damn thing said 'coin mech jammed' and halted  >:(

Yeah player 1 player 2 escape sequence is the pits. I'm going to get rid of the buttons on my next CP so that can NEVER happen again! ( not all the buttons obviously ).

Just change (reprogram) your ipac settings so this won't happen (change the shift key for P2 start to something other than ESC).  That's what I did to prevent this.

man....any time the phone would ring when you were playing Mike Tyson's punch out.  I guess they didn't put in a pause button cuz then you could use the slow motion button on a NES advantage and watch the game in slow motion and make it easy to beat.  but whatever.

That used to just piss me off.

I's surprised that no one mentioned the inevitable "nature calling".  The excitement of a high score combined with the fact that I always drink too much leads to problems.

Next project:  arcade machine - urinal combo.

You obviously missed that MIT urinal videogame thing that was posted a while back. You're WAY too late on this one. ;)

Funny...when i was young I was playing Joust at the local liquer stoer. I was kicking major butt, had so many extra lives they ran off the viewable oval in teh bottom stump. Anyway I waited as long as I could and ran behind the liquor store and took the most relaxing piss on the side of their building. I ran back in and the game was still playing. :)
