Title: ripped off on ebay: problem solved!!
Post by: dirt on March 29, 2004, 07:38:28 pm
ok here it goes. i got ripped off by a guy on ebay for $265. it was for 4 golden tee boards.i have his email address his cellphone number(he wont respond to either) and his actual address and i also have his website address that he runs for his truck club. now the question. "hypotheticly" what can be done to make his life hell until he pays up. i know some of you are great at this stuff. i just wish he didn't live half way across the country or i would know exactly what to do. ;) ;)
any ideas are welcome. by the way if anyone lives near tinley park il and would like to collect for me i'll split the cash or the boards with you.once again this is totally "hypothetical".

Well, that would certainly be an effective solution.   A bit on the severe side, perhaps?

you mentioned having his cell number and address , would you happen to have his home phone number?

you can do a reverse look-up you know...

make a few calls, do a little homework ... and find out his employer.

call the local law enforcement, and file a complaint...you'll be surprised at the outcome.

you can always play hardball too ... just be smart about it.  ;)

p.s. Collecting monies owed , or goods for that matter ... is right up my alley. Why don't you pass out his number? even an address could do some good... ;D

a reverse look-up is where you enter the street number/ street name, and in return you're provided with the home telephone number.

Hey, besides PayPal protection, eBay actually has an insurance as well.

from their site (under Fraud Protection):

"Under the eBay Fraud Protection Program, most items on eBay are covered for up to $200 (minus $25 to cover processing costs). Please note: the maximum reimbursement for any claim is $175. "

You won't get all your money, but something back is better than nothing.

Sometime last year around summer I got ripped off on Ebay for an mp3 player 40gig hard drive, I sent money using Paypal and never got any reply thereafter.  I found out he ripped off at least 2 others as well when I saw negative feedback.
We filed complaints through paypal AND ebay, and nothing ever came of it. except his ebay account became deactivated in a few days.  He had over 200 feedbacks, all positive high acclaim, there was no way to see it coming and apparently nothing that can be done about it.  Emails started bouncing from the aol address he was using.  I still have any phone/address/name info he originally gave when he tried to make me send a money order initially.

You guys need to keep whatever you're doing legal and above board, or you may find yourself the ones on the wrong side of the law while he ends up keeping your money... This is a public forum...

Where does he live?  Maybe someone on this board can go "visit" him.

Actually it's the other way around.  Find an address from a phone number.

ummmm, no !! I don't know about where you are, but here we have a directory that lists every street name and phone number, just as the white pages do.

the book lists in this order ....

street name / street number ------ resident / phone number

donnelly directory only produces a handfull of these each release, and they're not free like the usual phonebook. but you can research at the library if needed, but not checkout.

quite an amazing book actually !!

I came to this thread with the intention of saying "You could call him up and play stupid rap loops and yell stuff like 'PESTICIIIIIIDE!'", but I guess you already thought of that, huh?

Obviously, yeah, contact eBay.  I've never had this happen, but could you just go to your local PD and file some of complaint?

Personally, I'd like to have that happen, with some recording (man that was funny), but acording to www.anywho.com a reverse lookup is when you put in the Phone number and you can get people's name, address, city and zip.

but what do they know...they're just AT&T!!!!

I agree with what someone said earlier. Call the local police and inform them of what happened. Let them know that he has defrauded you of your money by selling an item that does not exist [it may but that cant be proven til it is produced]. I am not sure how moneygram works but if you used a credit card or bank card you can contact the maker of the card and dispute the charges. Let them know that you were ripped. Try calling from different phones or have someone from abother state or even the same area as the seller call. He may not be answering your calls cuase he sees the area code.

I had this happen for the monitor for my cab.  The seller had great feeback, but on this dutch auction he did not follow through.  I collected emails from his other auctions and that auction and got in touch with other's that had not gotten their monitor either.  Emails bounced, phone calls were not answered, etc.  His Ebay account was suspended, and I requested my money back through PayPal.

In that process I got his business (payment) address from another buyer who had sent a M.O., so I gave a call to the local police department and had a discussion with a detective. One thing I learned, this municipality (it was in New Jersey) would not do anything without the loss value being at least $500, this might be an issue for you.  I did not have that ( I think the monitor was $150, this was a few years ago).  Others that had not gotten their item forwarded me their info and we ended up having a few thousand dollars in total losses.  The detective said he couldn't do too much without a sworn complaint etc., but he would stop by the address and "have a talk with them".

It worked, the very next day all of our monitors were shipped, and mine even had an extra 5 BNC to VGA cable (about $30 online).

If someone is trying to rip somebody else off, a visit by the police, or a stern letter from an attorney will usually get them motivated to do the right thing.

An interesting end note to this is PayPal also credited my money back to me, so I had the monitor and the refund.  I could not resend it via PayPal since his account was frozen, so I emailed and called for about a month after that so I could get him his money that he was rightfully owed (I didn't want to stoop to his level).  I never was able to get hold of him as to how I should pay for the monitor, so the monitor in my cab is still unpaid for to this day.

Are you running your system with a firewall & anti-virus program?  If not, and maybe even if, your system may have been compromised by a spammer and they used it to send or relay spam, in which case a block is the standard approach.

The goods never arrived right? How long have you been waiting? Sometimes people are just real slow to mail stuff out. If the guy has a good sized history of positive feedback I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and wait awhile longer, and keep trying to contact him.

But if he has no feedback history... >:(
