Title: My Star Wars Crashes...well, just stops working correctly.
Post by: allroy1975 on March 20, 2004, 10:22:26 am
When I play Star Wars I can only play on Easy...but if I get past the space , right before I'm supposed to swoop down to the death star R2D2 makes some squeaky noises then I continue to fly around in Space.  TIE fighters stop bothering me.....everything pretty well just keeps moving.  I can still shoot and stuff, but I never swoop down to the Death Star.  If I choose Medium or Hard, this happes on the first level.  Since Easy is....well....it's getting a little too easy, I'd sure like to figure out why this is happening.
I'm running MAME32 .79.

Anyone ever seen this before?

Thanks
Allroy

Known issue.  Upgrade to .80, I believe it's fixed there.

doesn't appear to be.  I got to the death star once on Medium, so I thought it was fixed and was poised to start setting INSANE high scores(well...so long OBI and WAN  ;) ) but then the second time around I got stuck in space again.  :(

WEAK!

It's fixed in .80u1 I believe.... which means it's still broken in the "official" build.

I could be wrong though.

What was just fixed was another issue that was created with the timer changes..

But it was just talked about and I think they readded a hack that fixed the problem.  So if its not official... it the solution is a one line code fix (already in the code) just needing to be uncommented out.

I would also like to see the no adding extra shields bug go away.

There was a workaround in previous MAME's, (assume it still works).

From My Twisty-Grip plans -

Q: The game does not remember my dip switch settings (I want 9 shields!)
A: The MAME DIP settings are not used - The self test settings are used to set and remember any options.  Get to the self-test mode by setting the first mame disp switch option to ON (Maintenance).  Then restart MAME or press reset (F3).  Hit 5 (not F%) until the option screen appears.  Note that fire does not work in the option screen so use "1", not F1,  While you're in that mode, check out the yoke's calibration on the next screen.

A similar method can be used to get 5 lives in Q-bert.

I need all the help I can get.

This problem hasn't been fixed at all anywhere (though it was reported many times for months & months); if it's just one line that needs to be changed back, the MAME team should change it back and leave it alone like their mamma told them to until they find a better fix, IMHO.

For those who don't know how to compile their own with the changed line of code or who can't get compiling to work for lack of time or otherwise (I fall, sadly, into both categories), I recommend using NoNameMAME - it is fixed in that variant, and works like a charm (I tried it out to fix something else, and found out as a nice bonus that the "do not approach Death Star" bug was fixed).

The fix is out!  I just verified for myself that this bug is fixed in official MAME v.81.   :)
