Title: Carnevil stuttering sound
Post by: purbeast on April 06, 2025, 03:51:09 pm
Initially I had the issue where the game did not run at the right speed, but I saw the fix for that on here by I think setting autosync to 0 in a custom ini file, which solved the game speed issue.

However while the game plays at the right speed, I am getting random sound stuttering.  It's not a constant thing either it appears to be quite random.  Sometimes the clown dude will stutter like 1x or 2x when loading up the haunted house level.  Then when I start shooting those enemies you can definitely notice some more stuttering there as well.

I own an actual Carnevil PCB so I know what it should sound like and yeah, it's definitely not quite right.

I have searched on this but haven't come across anyone else having this issue so it makes me wonder.  I am using GroovyMAME .237 if I remember correctly.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

I'm confused what in that link you are really referring to.

That thread is referring to the game speed running too fast.

Exactly, We had problems with Midway 3D games but Calamity found solution for strange speed and sound stuttering. Just get latest groovymame and re-create default configuration. With recommended groovymame settings game should work fine now.

Okay great, I will try that out when I have time to get around to it.

So I just upgraded to .276 this morning and I am still seeing the same stuttering sound issues unfortunately.

Any ideas on the specific settings that may need to be set for this game?

EDIT:

I tried setting these from a post of yours from a while back, so that's what I currently have.

waitvsync 1
sync_mode 0
refreshspeed 0
syncrefresh 0
throttle 1

Changing waitvsync setting from 0/1 is noticeable as far as screen tearing goes in this game.

Do you think this could potentially be a hardware issue?  i'm running like 10 year old hardware basically, and one of my RAM slots on the motherboard is busted so I only have 8gb of ram in there instead of the 16gb that I actually have.

Seattle driver is very demanding. Carnevil runs in game from 250 to 300 % speed on 10600KF on stock MAME.

Ah okay.  Then yeah probably a hardware issue. My buddy is giving me an i7 and 32gb of RAM.  Right now I am on an i3 so I am guessing this will resolve that problem.

Pay attention to single core score rather than generation or class. I think most games still uses single core for emulation. In many case most recent core i3 (12100 or 13100) will be enough.

I ended up getting an i7 6700k from my buddy with 32gb of RAM, and it runs Carnevil without any stutters.

Time Crisis 2 however still runs slow and from what I've seen, it's working more recently and needs a higher end CPU to work.  I'm hoping it gets some work and gets optimized at some point but not holding my breathe.

NamcoS23 driver is currently marked as not working (though You can play game as I can see). Still on 10600KF speed drops to 88% in Time Crisis II. Some games barely gets 40%.

That's a big difference even on single core performance :)

If this cpu can't play it, the game needs optimization. This is why I bought the CPU haha

On my arcade PC I have 14100F. I wonder how will work on this processor.

EDIT. Time Crisis II stil works slow even on this processor.
