Does anyone know where I can find an old version of MAME32 that allowed recording play to avi or are there othre methods to recording MAME playback to AVI.

Check out a program called SnagIt

Recording out of mame doesn't work too well, use a third party program like jakobud suggested....
These are the settings you want:
Turn off hwstretch, direct3d and direct draw
Set window mode to 1 and max to 0
Now the game will pop up on your desktop in it's native resolution without "blending" issues.
Select the window with your capturing program and your all set.
For capturing settings I suggest a modest 10fps with the sound at 22 khz or less. These are the settings peter and myself use.

You can use FRAPs (http://www.fraps.com/download.htm (http://www.fraps.com/download.htm)) look at the different versions and decide which one works for you. It works great even with DirectX based games. I've never tried it with MAME but I can't imagine that it wouldn't work.

That could make a cool screensaver instead of static screenshots. Unfortunately I've never found a free screesaver that would randomly pick movies from a list/directory and play them. If anyone knows of any let me know.

Hehe I use emusaver so I get to see the actual games running instead of avis and I can play them if I see one that's interesting.
