Hi
Just set up a groovymame win 10 pc and all seems to be working fine apart from an annoying problem.
When I start a game a pop up will appear and say "switchres: error trying to fill monitor range with"
Anyone know how I can get rid of this ?
I followed the "Groovy MAME: Installation and quick configuration (2019 guide)" and all went well until this.
Any help would be great

I'm just using the one
that came in the groovymame folder for mame 0.252.
I think I followed these steps correctly
2. Create a directory for MAME in the target computer, say, C:\GROOVYMAME, and extract into it the content of Groovy MAME's compressed file. A file with the name mame64.exe should be there. Right-click it, go to Properties, Compatibility and give it Admin. privileges.
3. Make sure the following folders are there: C:\GROOVYMAME\ini and C:\GROOVYMAME\ini\source. The former will be the folder to place per-game (per-machine, in the case of home systems) INI configuration files, while the latter will host per-driver INI configuration files. These INI files will only be needed when we want specific MAME settings for a game or group of games, since they'll get priority over Groovy MAME's main configuration file mame.ini. Remember this.
4. If it's not present after the extraction, create mame.ini: Right-click mame64.exe and click Send to, Desktop (create shortcut). Place this desktop shortcut into GM's directory (paste in C:\GROOVYMAME). Right-click it, go to Properties, Direct access label, and, in the target field add " -cc" -- that is, if it has:
C:\GROOVYMAME\mame64.exe
...it must have:
C:\GROOVYMAME\mame64.exe -cc
Now make it accept the change and double-click this direct access.
5. Make sure a mame.ini file is now in your Groovy MAME directory and delete the direct access you pasted there in the previous step.

Just an update , I decided to use launchbox frontend and once I got it set up I do not get that error anymore , its only when I use the mame built in GUI.

I installed GM 0.253, also keep getting the error (error trying to fill monitor range with)

Just a guess, but Groovymame may be confused about what your monitor can do.
In Vmmaker, last tab "mame", browse to find your Groovymame executable and tick the box "Export settings to Groovymame". Then press OK and you will see a message in the command window "Exporting settings to mame.ini...", which is fairly self-explanatory.
Must be a bad echo in here? I keep hearing my own voice saying that same thing :blah: :dunno
Like most of us, Calamity is a busy guy, and will normally not provide any more meaningful comment unless you provide a log file :D
Instructions on how to do that are in his signature line, bottom of every post.

Sorry I have not time for troubleshooting.
I said I have no error here because I just downloaded GM 253 from my own site, unzipped it on Windows 10, double-clicked on it and it works.
It will spit an error about "Switchres couldn't find a mode that meets your specs" if you don't have the correct modes installed, as it always did.

It’s just a CRT tv with RGB scart. I did export the settings to GM, but I only installed the super resolutions (15 modes). I followed these instructions to the letter : https://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=1052#p1052
I can get the error to dissappear if I also install the modes generated by the Mame xml, but I only want to use the super resolutions 🙂

I work 2 jobs, Fiber optic installer during the day and paramedic in the evening/weekends, so trust me when I say that i’m also a busy guy 😉 Just looking to find out what i’m doing wrong, nothing more

The error reported by the OP was fixed by 253.
You're probably seeing a different error, and unless you provide a log this exchange is worthless.
Well it looks like you still get that error if option monitor is set as "custom" in mame.ini (VMMaker does that) but no actual crt_range is set (all are set as "auto"). Could you check your mame.ini after using VMMaker? There could be a problem there.
EDIT: Nevermind, I could finally reproduce it here.

I've gotta ask - when you are busy working and in the thick of things with your hands full of spaghetti-stuff, ever get confused which job you're doing? I have high admiration & respect for paramedics... and fibre installers naturally too, of course :)
Only reason I have any time for this is I'm semi-retired. Even so, not enough time, busy always, days never long enough.

Yes, sometimes I need to take a second to reflect on what i’m doing, but the fact that I have OCD comes in quite handy at times like these. I check and keep double checking so it’s harder to make a mistake (if that makes any sense)

OP here , I packed this computer away and have only just got it out again , I'm still getting the error and the picture is very narrow on my PVM.
Now sorry for being a PITA but I've totally forgotten what to do with the install , do I just need to run the latest groovymame and update my rom set to the latest to get this fixed ?

You should try the new GroovyMAME, and make sure to leave everything default and not set a custom monitor. As in, pick one of the monitor presets for your PVM - Arcade15 is a good choice.
You probably don't need to update roms unless you run into issues, at least not for testing.

OK great , I'll have a play around , can I just overwrite the old groovymame with the new one or do I need to start a new one from scratch following the geedorah guide ?

Had a play around with GM and VMM last night , seem to have updated to 0.257 OK and it looks like the pop up message has gone but I'm still getting the squished screen 90% of the time , now and again it's perfect. I've tried , generic, arcade , arcade extended , 15khz mode lines
Original I set this up on Sony crt TV and didn't have this issue , its only happened since I've moved it over to the PVM.
I'm also curious as to when it boots up it flicks between 16khz & 15khz (does this on all 3 modes ive tried) ? I have atom15 installed, once the windows logo comes on the screen it's fine so I presume it's the bios splash screen displaying at 16khz , is this normal ?
Anyway hopefully tonight I will workout how to create a log and post it here.

Try changing your directory to E:\Groovymame and running it from there. Change directory like this:

I tried that , still blank , anyway in desperation I was playing with the VMMaker settings and now can't get any display now. .
I've had enough of it now so I'll pack it away and start fresh when I can be bothered.

ok , went back to this and went a bit crazy spending my whole weeks holiday building 3 groovymame PC's out of spare parts i had , eventually i got them all working but what ive noticed is i get the above fault (squashed image) if i use atom 15 , also i was having a problem with garbled graphics when starting retroarch.
Anyway flashed all my cards back to normal (that was a pain but used this guide)

and all works perfectly now , i use a JPAC and a Extron RGB109xi (Tells me when its safe to switch my TV on) so im not overly bothered about it , just a shame as it was nice to be able to boot up in 15khz.
Ive used atom 15 in the past on XP and all was good but ive had nothing but trouble on Windows 10
