Title: Hacking TV EEPROM
Post by: Zebidee on September 19, 2022, 10:37:50 am
So, after fixing a dodgy EEPROM on one of my TVs (by swapping in a know good EEPROM IC from another TV), I decided having an EEPROM burner would be nice for making replacements.

I found this ridiculously cheap USB EEPROM burner for about US$6-8. I also got a 10 blank EEPROMS (24C08, DIP-8 packages) for a similar cost.

Then I desoldered the EEPROM from my main testing TV (component modded), dumped it, edited the data slightly (logo), put it back in...

Now I have a GreenAntz TV!

Irony is, you only see this new logo when the TV is NOT receiving any input from the GreenAntz!

My small amusement for the evening :D

That's fun.

More fascinating stuf I'm still clueless about!

I use the ch341 to reprogram bios's on motherboards that fail to boot. quite often the chip goes bad causing it. download a new bios, and dump it on... bam! up and going again.

i've rescued 4 or 5 boards from this now.

neoprogrammer is the software i use. seems to work pretty good.

@lilshawn

Thanks for the neoprogrammer tip! You really are a wealth of information :D

It seems to have been updated more recently, and seems to support a wider range of chips.

Development links are dead, but other download links are out there.

I used some generic Chinese software (recommended by seller) dating back to 2004. Works well enough, but it only supports the 24XXX and 25XXX series of chips.

You have to "Run as administrator", otherwise it won't work (and won't be able to quit either, needed to use Task Manager to end task).

You also need to install the driver first (comes with software) and put the "english.ini" file into "languages" folder (why it isn't there to begin with, I cannot say).

Original development links for this are long dead too.

If you are interested, you can download it here:

This video of how to use the CH341A + software is essential viewing:

Good "tool" to have in your kit.

@Bobby

You'd be fine once you got your brain around it. None of it is rocket science. You are a wizard at the carpentry/painting/craft stuff. Play to your strengths.

That thought in mind, I always find it hard to change "modes", like from carpentry/painting/craft stuff to programming/electronics/wiring stuff. It is almost like I have to lift a flap on my skull and move a switch in my brain. I'd say it gets worse as I get older, but when I was younger I didn't know ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---, so comparisons would be pointless :D

Can we reset the switch?

:lol is actually a towel. I was aware of reflections and wearing short-shorts, didn't want anyone feeling jealous :D
