Title: RetroPlay (bartop) - updated - New CP
Post by: RecycledPast on February 25, 2004, 04:36:27 pm
See the new CP photo further down the page 11/8/04

Here's my first attempt at a MAME machine.  Although the machine is functional it's not done.
It's a P2, running DOS & arcadeos. Only vertical games.

I rushed to get it working for a party I had last weekend so the artwork is very plain since I didn't have enough time to spice it up.

The wire hanging out the side is there because I was trouble shooting the spinner.

I have a ton of respect for everyone that has made a machine.  It was more work then I had anticipated. I almost didn't want to show mine since everyone else's looks so much better.

Looks good to me and 99% of any project is that it works - The rest is just polish :)

Are the joysticks 1 4-way and 1 8-way?

How/where do you have the pc mounted?

I'm considering building up a bartop type now that the bug has bit me (I think I'll always have to have a project going now....)

Hope the paint was dry...

Throw some t-molding on it.  It would look much better.

Wanna trade your spinner for something, once you pull it out?

Also, your problem might just be that you have mouse input=0 in your Mame config, that is stupidly the default for some reason.

Zathras: Yes, Yellow=4way Green=8way
I don't really have the motherboard "mounted"
It's just sitting on the bottom.  I didn't measure the height of it with the video card before I started so I had to cut a notch in the shelf to fit the sound and video cards, which ends up holding it in place.  I didn't cut the notch deep enough so the MB isn't deep enough so I had to cut a whole in the back so the video cable sticks out about a 1/2 inch.

I just ordered a free sample of t-molding, so I'll test it out on some scrap pieces of wood.  The plywood I used is kind of crappy and I'm afraid that when I try to route the slot it will just chip apart.

Paigeoliver:  I plan on using the spinner on my next project, but if I change my mind, I'll let you know.

I tested a regular PS2 mouse on the machine and it works.  The spinner is USB with a PS2 adapter on the end.  I tried the spinner on a windows laptop and couldn't get it to work on there either but it does work without the PS2 adapter.

Oh, those PS2 adaptors only work if the "mouse" or "keyboard" has both types of hardware inside.

I redid the CP,
 - Removed the 2  joysticks
 - Removed a button.

 - I added a T-Stick Plus long balltop
 - added a custom printed CPO
 - added plexi glass over CP
 - added t-molding around CP

After a few parties I noticed the 4 way 8 way thing confused people.  I think my next machine will be dumbed down as possible.

Pretty good job. Just looks like you need a sander to smooth out those sides, and smooth out the curve of your control panel. Everything else looks good.

I just love those bartops--looks pretty good to me and yeah I had to dumb down mine alot for her parent's as well as remove  any and all button combos that would make things happen (i.e. shortcuts) then i wrote out detailed instructions on how to use it--they are running well now.
