........one giant leap for CP art and backgrounds. :o
Thought I'd share a tutorial I found for PhotoShop space art. This guy god creates star and planet art better than a Lucasfilm. Best part is, the tutorial shows how absolutely anybody in this forum (with Photoshop) can do it, since it's all filter based. OK, so there are quite a few small steps for PhotoShop, but check out the results.
Here's the link to the starfield tutorial:

and the planet tutorial:

Note that for better or worse, these require VERY little artistic ability at all, ::) yet they are infinitely customizable and tweakable. They are raster based so a CP overlay or side art would be a huge file, but imagine the possibilities!
These images are from the website. They are not my artwork, but show what you'll end up with by the end of the lesson.
Something tells me there's about to be a lot more space themed cabs coming. ;)
Enjoy. ;D

Awesome!
I just finished my marquee and it has both a planet and a starfield, and I could have used this tutorial over the weekend. Instead I had to use some art from deviant. I would have preferred to do my own thing had I seen this tutorial earlier. Oh well, there is always the next cab...

They're fantastic tutorials and very handy for some arcade artwork, thanks for the links Pixelhugger. ;D

Thanks for the link. You're right, now I am rethinking my cab theme...
-
WOW!!! Thanks for the great link.
-
grr..
My arcadia artwork was designed BEFORE this tutorial started circulating....
*worries that tons of space themed cabs will come out, making his artwork unoriginal and generic looking* :(

I started to do a space theme instead of the Mini/ Galaga theme that I went with. If I had seen this before I probably would have gone with the space theme. Really neat!

Dang, and here I was experimenting with 3D rendering for space themes. Thanks for the great links!

Another cool tool to use that I have messed around with (and used in a recent CP overlay I made) is this open source software:
www.flam3.com
It uses a sorts of crazy algorithms to generate crazy shapes and surfaces. Throw them into Photoshop and adjust their colors a bit and you can have some wicked overlays.

There's alot of thing you can simply do in photoshop. To make lightning you end up using the cload distort, inverting it. adjust levels and hues. You will get lightning.

That artists work is amazing! You can even buy his prints on Zazzle. If he'd add some more spaceships in there he could be another John Berkey -another artist with mad skillz. Thanks for posting that Pixel.

Thats some of the most beautiful space artwork I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing.

Hmmm think I might just try this out.

Gave it a shot and came up with this: http://www.animecritic.com/_temp/art/starfield-attempt1.jpg
I went for a more realistic look and tried to blend the reds, purples and blues to that effect (the original was a lot bigger, too, but I cropped and rotated it).
Next I'll give that planet tutorial a shot...

Not a bad first up effort, looks like that picture might have been taken with the Hubble telescope.

Here's attempt #2: http://www.animecritic.com/_temp/art/starfield-attempt2.jpg
I re-did the original starfield from attempt #1 to make it look more "artsy" and less realistic. Then I tossed in a planet using the planet tutorial and voila.
This is kinda fun. ;D

i went through this tutorial, but if you ever look at a hubble pic usually a system is very colorful, not just one color. I noticed with the hue effect all the stars are just blue. You might want to Make a couple of layers with different starfields with differnt hues.

Good find!

Has anyone checked out his (Greg Martin's) downloadable wallpaper?
I really like his DARKSKIES piece. I may even buy a print......

Your attempt looks a lot better than mine. I made a 1600x1200 background for my computer so I had to run it pretty small when I was editing it. When I made it my background, the parts of the starfield that I erased were painfully obvious. I'm sure I'll just have to practice some more.
