I just completed my first stand alone control panel, single player.  It's a gamepad hack.  I will post some pics soon! :)

I spaced the buttons a tad too far apart for my preference.  Oh well, live and learn.  I still have another joystick and 10 more buttons laying around.   ;D

Notice the nifty brass hasp used to keep the lid tightly closed.

Did you buy the "special mame marble overlay" from ebay for only $59.99 ?

I dislike the pattern of the CP overlay, despite of that it's nice! Very sharp!

Are you intending to "house" that small CP to a cabinet? Why don't you make a bigger one? It might compensate.

Congrats anyway  :)

Boy can I relate to that. My stand alone controler made me happy for about two days before I decided that I REALLY needed a full cab. If you're not married take the plunge and get started on that cab. If you are married, you're probably going to have to start working on convincing the wife.  ;)

The women in our lives comes up alot...
There should be a "wives" page setup
Maybe a support group or something.

How about a top ten list "Honey, we need an Arcade machine because..."

I found that overlay in the shelf paper rack at Walmart for $5.99.  I put it on a panel too.  It was really really thin, and it didn't hold up well.

I like the look of it !

8) It keeps me in the house and closer to you!

7) Just look at how much my woodworking skills have improved, after a few more cabinets, I'll be able to work on that hole in the ceiling.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I really appreciate it.  :)  I definately am gonna continue on future projects.  I don't like the button layout on this one myself, my next panel is going to be larger, for two players, with enough room to space out the buttons better.  I've been looking at some of your projects, and have found some control panel layouts that I like better.

But in the meantime, I am going to enjoy my new panel by playing some X-Men vs. Street Fighter and some Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix.   :D

I could definately use some more reasons to give the better half why its a good idea to build an arcade cabinet...   ;D

 - no wife, so I'll stay out of the count down

Joystick looks pretty solid, only complaint I'd have with it is that you used vertical pushbuttons instead of horizontals.  I did this on my first joystick too, and when I switched over to horizontal pushbuttons, I literally felt a world of difference between the two  buttons.  The marble doesn't look too bad, it's definitely a nice touch for a starting joystick, but if you're really going to get into this I suggest you take a look at some examples of lexan/plexi over printed artwork.  A great way to tell how much the overlay can make a difference is to  look over at http://tobywong.50megs.com  his artwork is pretty damn slick and looks very good underneath all the layouts, even if it doesn't match the controls exactly.  Another cool thing about using Lexan or Plexi is that you really don't need any screws to hold it down, because the buttons themselves if tightened well enough should keep it in place no problem.  Plus you can screw in the joystick underneath the plexi, making the illusion of a completely flush control panel.  And when it comes to fighting games, flush is MUCH better than having a screw waiting to scratch up your wrist, although they do make flat head bolts you can stick in, flush does look A LOT cleaner.
       - also, zip ties can do a world of wonder on those messy wires, you went the right direction with those quick disconnects, makes life 100 times easier.
-hope to see some more good stuff, keep it up

Ok... explain to me why horizontal pushbuttons are better than vertical?

I did look at http://tobywong.50megs.com/ and I like his artwork under the lexan, that looks TIGHT!  (Especially the Ryu vs. Akuma).  I will definately go that route next time.  Also, his wiring job is excellent as well, very clean and neat.

*sigh* Only just completed my first controller, and now I want to go bigger and better!   :D

Alright, the reason why horizontals reign supreme over verticals:  A: shorter throw, aka you have to lightly press them to get a click, and the distance they physically move before the click is MUCH shorter, as where a vertical pushbutton takes a bit more than a light touch, plus you have to keep a very constant force on the button to make it actually push.  B: mashing, if you're going to be doing a qcfx2+kk with Ken in street fighter, and want to bust out all 15 hits w/ mashing buttons, if you can mash with verticals you're gonna be hurtin the next day.  Horizontals literally feel smooth under your hands, and are MUCh easier to press.
Basically this is all I have to say, and this is from experience:  for your next joystick or project, use horizontal pushbuttons.  TRUST ME ON THIS ONE!!  When you use the horizontals and try to use your verticals again, you'll be like "wtf....what are these things?"
-personal experience from someone who's super into fighting games, so I require light presses and what not.
