Title: controls.dat/xml status and alternatives?

Hi all. I'm starting a new project which includes mame controls mapping to user CPs. I'm wondering where controls.dat is at and whether it's been superseded by another system?

The most recent I can find is for 0.141.1 dated 01.05.11.
