Title: NeoRod (Hotrod/XArcade Clone on the cheap)
Post by: djfender on March 17, 2018, 10:29:06 pm
As you can see my hotrod has seen better days, the particle board is disintegrating and will cost much less to duplicate the shell.

Im converting it to a hinged top with closed bottom, like a mortal kombat console stick. So i can stash things in it :)

Note that the Hanaho Hotrod is actually measured weirdly not including the T molding, as these were made cheap as possible theres a lot of kerf room, and thus being a little bit sloppy with the jigsaw is ok 👌OR you can do like me and make it 24 inches without T-molding and build a neo geo 25 v2 around it :)

Ok so you'll need:

24 inch by 24 inch MDF "Handy Panel" at 3/4"
24 inch by 24 inch hard board (the thickness is your choice, its simply cosmetic)
Some hinges
Some screws

Notice the X arcade has the strange outward jutting corners so you can unplug it from the matching cab, we will not be copying this as this project is meant for people who "only have a jig saw and a drill" like myself.

Im going to add more later, the girlfriend wants help making dinner ;)

Step 1, mess up the other half of your MDF trying to cut 2 feet with a jigsaw in a straight line, proceed to fall back to the good old fashioned plywood...

Use a straitedge to guide your jigsaw. You should probably read up on basic woodworking to help you out. There is a lot of knowledge out there. You just have to take some time.

Step 2, finish building your new scratching post...

Step 3, now that you've gotten an open beer, take the 11/16×2.5×8ft MDF you got the home depot guy to cut into 2 ft and 1 ft slabs.

Assemble them into Everbuilt 3 Inch corners...

Add hinges and rehearse the design with some decent tape with the hobby board...

Make pilot lines, for the saw to notch out the 2.5 inch by 11/16 by 11/16 ish overhang left over from home depot so you get a nice snug fit, then screw in the corners were there is meeting corners with enough wood to drive in your 8x1 screws in pilot holes.

And there you go, about 50 bucks makes you a nice shell of which to design a control panel from. This one is also specifically matched up to also be "THE APPROXIMATE WIDTH OF A NEO GEO 25 INCH MODEL 2 CONTROL PANEL"

There you go.

then drill out your favorite layout with a 1 1/8 spade bit on super slow setting

Since most of the corner is metal, there is no way for the corners to get chiped

And then yeah, put your buttons.

Roomy roomy, just about enough room to keep a few Xbox or playstation games  stored inside.

You can use thicker hobby board and thinner MDF if you're confident in your hinges. Would like your sanwa stick to stick out a bit more, or not fond of the way that the overhang is.
