Title: Retro Sonic Mania (240p)
Post by: kortina on November 21, 2017, 11:54:17 pm
Hi Guys,

Not sure if may of you have thought about using Sonic Mania in 240p, so I thought I would put together a quick demo to see what the game is like in 4:3 240p mode.

It looks stunning. I can't describe how good this plays on an old CRT with a USB Genesis/Megadrive clone controller.

Special thanks to Calamity for the drivers!!!

Cool.

I really liked sonic mania.
Its everything sonic is suposed to be to me.

I never played it on a CRT but I imagine it would be right at home.

Looks amazing!
Does the game itself actually have an option to set the resolution? if yes which one did you use?

I have tested it but for me it was something like 16:9 inside the 4:3 tube - how did you change the gfx settings?

You *can* set the values in the settings.ini for the screen resolution.

However, I took the method of setting the desktop to EXACTLY what I wanted, then just launched the game in Fullscreen mode!
Less messing around.

You need to add:
pixWidth=1 into the settings.ini file

Here is the FULL detail, basically pixWidth=1 = 4:3, I think there are other values for 5:4, 16:9 but didn't bother figuring it all out when I don't need to use it.

The game in 4:3 is great, the menu is a little chopped off due to 4:3 + Overscan.

just tested it - thanks for the 4:3 tip it looks great!
I couldn't get it to run in anything lower than 640x480 though

Same here! I got it to run with my desktop on 240p, but only while Mania is windowed, so the edges get cut off. If I try to run it in 240p with fullscreen, it just crashes and closes immediately. I can get it to run in 4:3 fullscreen, but only at 640x480.

Then, once the game boots just double check in the dev menu (accessed with esc key) that it's set to a 4:3 window, and ta-da! Works great.

:) Hope this helps solve your problem.

EDIT: Aha! I just got it to work! So for my settings, in the settings.ini file, I enabled the "devmenu=1" option under game, added "pixwidth=1" under video and switched winwidth and winheight to 320 and 240 respectively.

thanks for the tips!
I used a batch file: changescreenresolution to 320x240 -> launch game -> change back to 640x480 once game is closed , works fine :)

Could you share the batch file? I'm trying to do the same but without success.

sure get the zip here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/7ia1zdgucwxfd1n/launch240p.zip/file
unzip in sonicmania directory and start launch240p.bat

the batch is this:

Code: [Select]
changescreenresolution /w=320 /h=240 /d=0
SonicMania.exe
changescreenresolution /w=640 /h=480 /d=0

uses the changescreenresolution program to set 240p , launches the game then changes back resolution to 480i (assuming a crtemudriver setup with a 15k screen)
