Title: The beginning of my "Showcase" That thing like dust:)
Post by: SilverVice on January 30, 2004, 08:11:07 pm
Hello guys this is the beginning of my "showcase" like cabinet. I still have a lot of work.

My to do list:

1- All the artwork on the cp, (the rest still like that)
2- Put leds on each buttons and the trackball (and maybe some to light the mirror on the side and on the front)
3- Fix the chrome Mouldings around the cp ( I have so much trouble with that)!!!!
4- Of course the rest of the cabinet to put my D9200!

---On the pictures it's look like wood but it's all mirror. I will take better pictures later.

Any comments will be welcome.

And I know a lot of you prefer the authentic look, so please don't be to hard on me. ;)

Cool. :) Is the CP top mirrored too, or just white?

Looks real sharp!  Personally, I like it without any artwork.
Does that spinner get in the way though?
Keep us posted.

Thanks guys. Yes the top is just white but I'm really thinking of changing it to mirror. Do you think that will be better?

The thing is, if I dont put any other colour I will feel in the obligation of make all the rest in mirror too to make it fit.

Mmmm when I think about it, I might put all the rest of the cabinet mirror!!!  :o

Nah, I really like the white, I was just curious. :)
The mirroring seems like a pretty good way to camouflage a cabinet. Not sure how the rest of the cab will be shaped, but personally, the last thing I want to see while playing a game is me playing a game :)

Nice job! How thick is the mirror that was used? Was it a pain cutting out those holes for the DVD and coin door?

Actually, this is 1/8 Acrylic Mirror, it look like mirror but it's virtually unbreakable, flexible and it's  easy to cut like lexan.

As you can see, it's so easy to cut that you can cut your buttons holes right in it. That's what I've done for my pinball buttons.  ;D

That is sweet looking! Very nice job.
Looks more like a showcase than a cab. Should work nicely in a living room, or elsewhere.

I would not do the CP surface in mirror, it would be a pain to keep clean. I have to clean my mirror in my bathroom once a week. You would probably have to clean the CP surface after every use...
Keep it white, or black something simple. It helps give the cab have a clean consistent look.

Don't to the bezel in mirror, like SpamMe said, it will probably give you a headache, or throw off your game.

Can't wait to see the rest!

How about clear Lexan or Plexi over a mirror CP?

I love original designs like this.

Does it have enough weight that it doesn't tip under 'rough play conditions?"

Very sharp. The white/ red CP coordinates nicely.

That is a sweet design. The look is fantastic. Though I think I would have left out the coin door, or at least made a fake one that sticks with the mirror look.

Did you build a frame to attach the acrylic to, or just use epoxy and corner braces?

Thanks guys, I appreciate your comments. I build all the frame with 3/4 mdf, so yes it's very solid. Then I glue the mirror on it.

For the coin door, I think the same way as you TheTick, so next week I'm gonna check to chrome it, depending of the price. What do you think?

I think having it chromed would be going overboard, but that would be freakin' sweet!  :o

I was thinking more of just the front being the same mirrored acrylic, and installing two LED lit square buttons, that look like coin reject switches (just push them in to add credits).

Hmmm... I'm thinking that acrylic would make a nice coffee table.

a chrome coin door would be awesome on this cab. You may go into sticker shock whey you check on the cost though. My other hobby is car restoration, so I've been there.

Check with your local powder coating specialist...they may very well be able to use a new process to chrome it.  The guy that redid my coin door mentioned a new process to me that seems much less expensive than chrome.  He showed me a sample and I assumed it was chromed, but it was definitely the new process.  Unfortunately I have no idea what it's called.  :)

Yeah, that's a good idea. I've seen some headers that were powdercoated that lookd pretty close to chrome, but won't discolor from the heat like chrome does. Obviously that won't be an issue with the your coin door.

WOW...looks great! ;D

I wouldn't chrome the door...I would do the top of the CP in black to tie with the door and make your buttons "po" a little more...but that's just me.

BTW, where did you find the mirrored lexan and what cost? I'm updating some furniture and this stuff would be great.

I bought mine at a small shop. They do plastic publicity. All the mirror you see one that picture cost me 82.00$ can. and they cut it for me. I ask them to buy the whole thing "4x8" and they told me it was 240$ can.  :o But keep in mine that I live in a very small city and i'm sure it would be a lot cheaper in a store with more volume.

Btw Invader, that's a good idea to put the CP black. I might do that since one day or another I will change the CP because I did not a good job on cutting the lexan on top and the chrome trip around it is starting to unglue!!!  ???

Looked thru Google, the smaller sheets have a lower sq foot cost. Quite a markup, but depending on how they had it shipped... it may not be that bad.

http://www.ridoutplastics.com/miracsheet.html
$115 US + shipping (can't be cheap... dimensional weight)
