....I just had the oddest thing happen last night.
When I set up my cocktail running Mame 78 on a HP/Compaq Celeron computer & Sony Trinitron Monitor.....some of the oldest classic games ran only horizontally rather than vertically. For example, games like Centipede, Burger Time and Qbert all ran in a stretched horizontal format (not even any black bars).
No matter what I did...and I tried everything including older version of mame...(and yes I of course I also tried every possible check off box for aspect switching in mame and on the monitor itself)...I just couldn't get them to run vertically.
I even tried reloading the roms; mame etc.....nada. Here's the kicker....the exact same version of mame and roms ran perfectly on my EMachines Athlon cab (horizontal mounted monitor) with black bars.
Sooo.....I assumed that it was simply a graphics card issue and gave up.
....so what's my point?.....last night for the heck of it, I clicked on Burger Time and PRESTO....it worked perfectly (vertical gaming goodness).
I can't think of anything that I've changed...yet it worked.
Centipede now works as well....but amazingly Qbert still gets stretched horizontally.
I don't know why it "got fixed" but I'm really glad it did!
The Baffled MameMaster!!! ???

I'm not bashing you in the least, but please choose a more appropriate nickname. By the phrase "I also tried every possible check off box for aspect switching in mame" You tell me that you are using mame32. Mame experts do not use mame32, at least not for primary gaming. Also your problem is easily fixed... check "keep aspect ratio" and you are done. (with a very few exceptions) If it doesn't work then you have screwed up the other settings which can alter the aspect ratio.
Some games are working and some aren't because you most likely adjusted individual game settings instead of the default settings.
A mame master you are not.
Hope that helps and....
Have a nice day. ;D

OUCH!....I just posted a loving message to you developers!...and you're bashing the poor MameMaster!
Any way, yes I tried that too....to no avail. I literally tried (I believe) every possible fix....and nothing.
Do you have any suggestions on why it appears to be working now?....yet still no go on Qbert?....keeping in mind I haven't changed anything at all (software or hardware).
MameMaster Forever! ;D
(FYI- To me I was a genius when I finally "figured" out mame. Thus....MameMaster!)

Howard's out with the cold pricklies today...somebody give the man a hug. ;D
mamemaster,
The only thought I have is like Howard said, "you most likely adjusted individual game settings." To fix this look for a qbert.cfg file inside your "mame\cfg" or "mame32\cfg" directory and delete it. Hope this helps.

...thanks for the love. Yowza....Mr. Casto was on a roll there yesterday sharing his "idiot police" enforcement.....for a moment I thought he was "Sam" from Trump's apprentice!
Side note to Howard....I'm pretty sure you were being funny/sarcastic....but, eh, I can't be positive. But please note I do bow before you on your wealth of technical knowledge (really, you obviously know your stuff I'm not being sarcastic here......I'm a neophyte, I know....but I'm trying!!!...I have a subscription to Wired, Maximum PC and a couple of others....I too must learn).
Anyway, thanks for the suggestions....I'll check the files.
Thankfully the bottom line is I'm happy they work now....despite the mystery!
