I've been looking for a little money on the side, doing something "relaxing" that I enjoy. So i've been going to Value Village everyday, and flipping electronics to some moderate success. I came across some speakers that looked nice (yamaha, with great cabinets), but had completely destroyed foam surrounds. So for $9, i decided that i would learn a new skill.
In local audio enthusiast FB group, a guy gave me some rubber surrounds that were a perfect fit for the 6.5" speakers, which saved me a significant chunk of budget.
Here are some pics of when i bought them.
-
With the speaker removed.
-
The surrounds cleaned up, the frame not cleaned of adhesive yet. (in hindsight, I wish i would've taken pics of the underside of the cone, as that's where the surround attaches to.
-
The inner part of the surround glued in place, under the cone.
-
Outside glued. A little sloppy on both speakers. Noob problems...
-
Aaaannnd all done, and working well. The rubber definitely needs some time to loosen up, but other than that they sound great. I'd keep them myself, but they're 6 ohms, and my receiver only likes 8 and up.
Just needed somewhere to post this, as I'm pretty excited to try this again. Maybe do some for other people eventually.

(nice work, btw)

Thanks pbj
hmmm...good call. But for now, they're on kijiji. For a $10 total investment, i'm going to try to get some money for them first. It'll please the mrs as well, since the last 3 purchases i made with intention to flip, i liked too much and kept. :lol

Lol. That may "work" but its not recommended. Probably need something larger than 1/2 watt as well unless you are using it for something really low power like headphones. Don't want to let out the magic smoke.
Resistance and impedance are not the same thing.

Assuming they don't sell, (as thats the only way i'd keep them), wouldn't i need something more like this?
https://www.amazon.ca/Chassis-Mounted-Aluminum-Wirewound-Resistor/dp/B008MLKDN8/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1492734958&sr=1-1&keywords=100w+2+ohm+resistor (https://www.amazon.ca/Chassis-Mounted-Aluminum-Wirewound-Resistor/dp/B008MLKDN8/ref=sr_1_1?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1492734958&sr=1-1&keywords=100w+2+ohm+resistor)
100w amp signal, so it would need to handle 100w of power, and add 2 ohms?
-
I only ever shoved a car speaker inside a pinball machine, but it worked fine with the cement resistor I posted.
-
25 or 50 watt resistor would probably work just fine. . Don't worry about heat or power consumption. Outside of big huge explosive action sequences at max volume, you're using less than 1/10th Watt at reference level.
-
Welp, that takes care of that.
Purchased for $9, no cost for repair parts, sold for $55.
Mission Accomplished. :afro:

HA! I only just now saw this. I suppose you're right about that.
