Hello All,
I blame Terry Red for this, but after looking at his build and him practically mentoring through. Rablack97 came up with this...I'm still amazed it's come this far. Sorry for the lack of documentation, was deep into the build. I posted this to also open discussions for others to ask questions if they are partaking in the same wormhole of a project. I will have to say building these are super fun and learning experience. A few shots, I'll post more if folks want to see more of the internals etc. Posting photos on here is a PITA, i get burned out too easy after the first post.
This is a Terry Red (big ass backglass) modified design, that I cut on CNC, pockets and only 12 1"finish nails hold this together, no screws. 3/4" melamine mdf core black on black.
So this has, high level
Full DOF feedback - 10 solenoids, shaker, gear motor (do not buy a gear motor, its a waste of money and offers no purpose)
Addressable leds
DIY Pin2dmd (real dmd)
Digital plunger
3 screens
xboxone kinect for BAM mode
5.1 surround sound system
i5 with gtx 970 8 gb ram
250 ssd + 1tb harddrive worth of tables

Anyways, there ya go if there's interest I'll post more frequently otherwise, just wanted to show what im up to these days.

Looks like the time of the vpin is back. I will be following.
-
Quality build. I just wish the back glass monitor didn't squish the designs. That kills it for me.
-
thats 32" led tv........do you mean you wish is was 4:3 instead of 16:9? Good luck finding one of those.
Its the norm for most full scale vpins, i think you can get huge 4:3 industrial led screens but i'm not willing to spend a grand or so on a screen.
Plus I will forewarn all pinball purists a vpin practically breaks all rules of engagement.
Whats funny is the purists at the space, give their little comments as well, but i cant keep em off of it. I didnt build it for specs purposes i built it for eyecandy and fun, and it's both, its a blast to play.
I'll post a photo of the line this will draw at TPF homie, i doubt the backglass aspect ratio will deter them from playing.
Forgot our homeboy tag....i'm slippin.

Oh, it's a sweet machine. But squished and stretched video kills the look for me on lots of things.
-
Has anyone reworked the art on some of those back glasses to better suit widescreen monitors?
-
Nah man all artwork is on your own bro...Keep in mind soft ware meant to be played on a PC back on the day as the hobby expanded and new thing evolved going back and redoing artwork for hundred s of tables didn't happen

Yeah, well it's a quality job, as always. We've come to expect that from you.
-
Having built one myself, I know how hard it is to get it altogether! good job overall. I'm not a fan of the super tall backbox but with good finishing, it could blend.
-
Think of big guns.....3 screens is was makes it so tall but...I go big or not at all

You don't play the backglass... :P

Man, I couldn't have said that any better........Vpins are not collectors items they are figments of imagination brought to life by those in the hobby. The idea with these is to have fun, not recreate a copy of an original, cause let me tell you, the physics are not fool proof. So you can dial down the backbox, unsquish the graphics all you want at the end of the day make your perfect visual replica, and guess what the sucker will sit in a corner and rot and you just sunk enough jack into it just buy a real one if you want purist specs.
However this bad boy spits sparks and flames and has a 1000 horsepower nitro infused big block with a wow factor.
I built this to see if i could do it, and learned alot.
I've have complaints about the flippers are too low, the screen needs more tilt, theres lag, etc.....
I gave them this look after they've played there 10th CONTINUOUS game.

I don't want to sound negative but yeah the head is just way too tall (for my tastes!). Having the DMD close to regular size shouldn't require that large of an LCD. I also don't like that extra info box above the DMD. Not throwing shade, you always do good work and this is no exception. I sent Haruman gingerballs a few weeks ago and I miss it bunches, I cope by going downstairs and playing my real T2 pin :)
Widescreen/stretched backglasses don't bother me.
I do got a few questions, if you don't mind.
List says DIY Pin2DMD but it looks like your running an LCD, is it an LCD or a DMD?
What are you using for DOF? I used a Sainsmart but I'm wondering what others went with, and if it wasn't a sainsmart how easy/hard was the set up?
Was the digital plunger worth it? I was considering one but gingerballs already broke the budget and I was running out of room inside the body. I just have concerns about calibration and how it works between tables. Is that a launch ball button under the plunger too? If so I'm assuming its for "trigger" games like T2 and STTNG.
No worries bro, i didn't built it to get everyone's approval either......I just built it.
I knew it would be a fathead but i had a vision of what i wanted in it, not for aesthetic purposes but for how can i implement this into the build and execute it.
I used automotive solenoids, addressable leds, halo rings for strobes and rgb flashers, gear motor and shaker.
I did use the 16 port sainsmart relay board, pretty easy to setup no different than the 8 port really
Yes digital plunger is cool it works well and the nudge feature is cool too.
Its a real full colordmd, Pin2dmd diy using 2 led matrix grids attached sideby side.....very cool highly recommended.
Yes, that was suppose to be a fire, but i didnt think to just map that to launch ball, its a wasted button basically. The plunger encoder doesnt include that button, i might add a low budget keyboard encoder to split them out if i find it impedes play.
The 3rd screen is not an infor screen, its provides video clips during future pinball play and plays killer videos for each table during table selection, i've gotten alot of TOO COOL compliments on that part.
I know i could taken some things out man, but you know my response to that bro........BOOOOOOOORRINNNNNGGGGG, why build if all your gonna do is replicate standard, might as well just buy, you build to give yourself autonomy to innovate.
Let me know if wanna know anything else :applaud:

You don't play the backglass...
No, but it's part of the overall look. And if you're going to go all out to make it bad ass, why not go all the way?
-
No, but it's part of the overall look. And if you're going to go all out to make it bad ass, why not go all the way?
Because all any vpin will ever be is a novelty. Unlike arcade games, which can be emulated near perfectly, pins will never be emulated properly. You will never accomplish the look of an authentic backglass with an LCD. Physics will never be perfect. Just enjoy them for what they are. #nothingbeatstherealthing
-
It looks great and I (of course) love the theme.
I built this to see if i could do it, and learned alot.
I'll probably build one at some point for just this reason.
-
Yeah, I'm not even a pin guy anyway, so I'm out. Great job Rodney, enjoy it.

If i was building a pinball replica, i see your point, I built a vpin, tv screens aren't in real pinballs are they?

This right here.......nuff said, no its not perfect, no its not stock.......these are super fun to build folks......
as Neph said its a novelty build, not intended to replace the real thing....

Awesome build! I'm with you on the whole "purist" thing. And at the same time give you props for putting a coin door. And a real DMD.

Actually the coin door was in honor of the homie yotsuya, he got on to me on my last cab, had no coin door.....
I hate having friends... :badmood:

Please tell me you're going to use an RGB LED DMD, and not a single color one.

Single color is boring...........and yes yes i did sir.
Full color DMD looks so much better.

Nice build as always! I am really impressed. :applaud:
What size screen did you use for the playfield? I am one of those guys who would love to see more pics of under the hood. I have to say that Terry has done a very good job of selling the big ass backglass with the addition of video for the screen above the DMD. Still not sure I could do it but I do like your logic behind why you did it.

46" samsung for the screen. Yeah i'm glad i did it, i was playing robocop and the video sequences really enhance the game play, makes it fun.
I'll post some photos since you asked.

I think they probably prefer real balls to a set of virtual ones.
-
Well thats if you find one that like balls at all. :badmood:

This looks really good. It makes me the video pinball tempting but the last thing I need is a new hobby.

Looks awesome! Can't wait to try it out at TPF!

Cool man, make sure you introduce yourself
I'll probably be the only brotha reppin the arcade community in the building :afro: Wont be hard to miss

Looks like a quality build. I'm with Yots on back glass image, not as a purist but aesthetics, squished images look janky. Still a blast to play though I bet, nice work!
-
ok i see what you guys are talking about now, thats just that one superman image the rest look fine......

It was nice to meet you and your wife at TPF. This is another amazing build by you!! Played about six games on this and it was very impressive.
Only pic I managed to get of it while you were setting it up :)
-
A pleasure to meet you as well. Glad you enjoyed it, will need to work out the kinks :dizzy:
-
Did you make that Killer Instinct in the background? It looks somewhat familiar.

Yep, all 3 of those are mine...and not one award....... :badmood:

If it were during spring break and/or spring training we likely would have gone.

Quality build. I just wish the back glass monitor didn't squish the designs. That kills it for me.
Same as you I cannot stand the older backglasses that get squished on a 16:9 or 16:10 screen. I wrote individual .REZ files (tablename.rez) which will custom size each B2s backglass per table. For newer DMD tables I just let them run at 1920X1080 but for the older 4:3 sized backglasses I run them at 1440X1080. Here is an example of how CV looks. This is just my test setup as I have yet to start building my cab but I have my Pin2DMD and Pinscape and Ledwiz all ready to go. hahah excuse the cardboard under the backglass monitor.. had to do something to set it on top of the computer.

Yeah it's software config issue i didnt get around to perfecting but now that it's home I will clean alot of this up, probably rebuild the drive and go win 7 instead of 10 this go round.
As VP 10 is evolving i'm gonna go with all vp 10 tables, Future, pinball arcade, and pinball fx2.
