Well with all the popularity of arcade games that look like furniture I thought I'd give it a try. Its a 2 peice design based on frostys plan (without rotating control panels), and I believe frostys plan was based on or adapted from Lusids plan. Its wide enough to hold a 27" tv.

The control panel is to short for 2 sticks 6 buttons and a trackball so I'm going to be bumping it out in the front. Thats what happens when you don't fully plan a project before you start.
-
I like the look of a natural wood cabinet.
Are you going to keep the Happ (black) bezel in there for the monitor or do you plan to use something oak-based?
And do I spy a second cab in the background?
-
That looks good! I've started down the wood cabinet path myself, good luck.
-
the black bezel stays, I ordered it for the project. It will have black leather t-molding,black vinyl covering the control panel, black coin door, plus black marquee retainer so the black bezel will coordinate well.
-
Sounds interesting. Looking forward to seeing the completed project.
-
nice :) You going with a natural stain color or a darker one?

I'm hoping the addition of the oak control panel means you have abandoned the black vinyl covering the control panel. Am I right?
-
Nope, I like the black vinyl. Only used oak on the cp because I had a scrap the right size.
-
Doh! I meant, "I hope the addition of the oak panel doesn't mean you are giving up the black vinyl top." lol, just kidding. If we all liked the same stuff, we'd all be making the same cabinets. I thought long and hard just deciding between black t-molding vs. wood edges. I do actually think the black accent looks good on a wood cabinet, I look forward to seeing how it turns out.
-
I agree that some elements of a cabinet call for non-wood surfaces. The kick panel on mine will probably be black melamine even tho' I'm going for a solid wood look on the rest. Something just feels right to me about certain things not being wood, though I can't put my finger on why. I guess if I were making a wooden toy truck, the tires would still be rubber.
-
Looks awesome!
What's going on with the sides near the control panel?
Looks like the CP is sunk into the side frames. There is also two sharp corners on the front corners. Are you going to round and sand them? Could you make the top of the CP hang over the right and left edges?
Just thinking about comfort and people resting their hands on the CP.
Can't wait to see it finished...
-
I finished it today and I think it came out great. I learned a few things for the next one but overall I was very happy with everything.

and I like the look and feel of the vinyl control panel.

Thanks for the compliment
The CP is indeed sunk in. Your hands never rest on those edges though. I don't like the look of CP's that over hang and that would require a major redesign of how everything fits together. The sharp front corners don't get in the way either.
I went with a similar design as my mortal kombat control panel as far as the edges and the mounting.

Looks great. I notice it matches very nicely with your cabinets. ;D

Actually there not my cabinets but I used the same stain from the cabinet builder. I ended up selling it before it was done. I didn't start building it to sell it, it just turned out that way.

Thats what happend with my first white cab, some dude I sold a stick just offered $1000 for the cab,19" monitor,CP and wanted to take it with him(came with a van, interesting coinsidence).
So I got rid of it before it was "complete" lol
I was so happy cuz I didnt like the cab at all... :P
The oak cab looks cool imo, just like frosty's(-rotating panel)

Yup props goes to frosty, this cab was based on his design without the rotating CP and to give due credit Frosty based his on a variation of Lusids. So that would make this another variation on the Lusid cab.

Did you end up using a tv? If so did you use svideo?
-
WOW! That looks very, very nice. Super job! 8)

It looks fantastic ... I think if I had choose to use that colors, my wife would let me bring mine inside ;D
By the way, something poped ... Are there any guns that migth transmit using radio signals ? It would make nicer cabs without using the cables for the guns ...
Anyone seen / tried anything like it ?
-
SWEET. I love the way it looks. The black CP looks right at home.
All these recent nice wood cabinets have me thinking... Maybe I ought to sell MameNation and build a nice, understated mission-style oak cabinet.
Hmmm... I smell a spring project.

Yes its a 27" Toshiba. Best buy sells it for $250. It can be turned on and off with a power strip and stays on S-video.

I used S-video and was very happy with the picture but it has component input and I believe their is a thread over in monitor/video explaining how to get component to work with a ATI radeon video card.

Their are no wireless guns that I know off. In fact the act-labs tv guns are the only tv guns I know of that work with a pc. They are also the only ones that are officially supported as 2 player but I have heard reports of other people getting the act-labs pc guns to work in 2 player by using mame analog+, its just not supported by act-labs.
The act-lab guns are ugly looking but they work really well with the tv I put into this cabinet. I had tried them with 6 other 25" tv's and was almost ready to give up on them becuase I couldn't get any accuracy out of them untill I tried the 27" tv I ended up with. All 6 of the 25" tv's I tried were brand new, I was trying to get the guns to work on a different cabinet that only fit a 25" tv.

Well .. great job anyway ... the gun thing was just a thought ...

Anybody used something like this for their non-painted wood cabinets? Might look kinda neat...
http://www.neonhusky.com/Products/CJ-Wood.html
-
That would look really neat if it fits.

-
I thought of something similar but with stone. My father is in to lapidary and I was wondering what a stone trackball might look like. It would probably be too heavy though. The wood would be really cool though.
-
Seems like the heavier the better. Extra weight would only make it roll more smoothly, right? A real stone trackball would be awesome!

Excellent cabinet. Love the look. Very nice.

Very nice indeed. Being a fan of wood cab's.
