So the time has come to begin my mini pin build.
Inspired by Malenko's build http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,150902.0.html (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,150902.0.html)

Picked up a cheap 19" for the backglass on ebay
(http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=149895.0;attach=350385;image)
Ordered some Cheap led pushbuttons. And a cheapo encoder on ebay.

First thing was to decase the monitor.

Some play testing.

Got a sheet of 1/2" blondewood from lowes. I was going to go with mdf but this lowes didn't carry it. But this word seemed pretty cool. I guess it's like plywood but sanded and primed.

Got to love my sloppy lines. Post production will fix that.

I decided to not go with a removable lock down bar. Instead just a palm rest.

Good start! It didn't take very long for a Gingerballs inspired build.

But we all knew they were coming. Might as well start early

palm rest is a great idea!
Love the name too, cant wait to see the progress :applaud: :applaud: :applaud:

Oh, I totally agree. These are so much more obtainable than a fullsize virtual pin.

The backbox 17" x 14" x 4.5"
Still planning on making some hinges.
(The front L brackets have been removed once the liquid nails dried)

Got some more done today.

Thank you. A clone of a clone. I got the next couple days off. I'm planning on painting tomorrow. I got some artwork put together also. Just need to find someone to print them.
-
So I went to ace and got some pins for my hinges and it only closes half way. So I am having to rework that and patch the holes i already drilled. Minor setback, but lesson learned. Always test before drilling.
-

Ken does all my prints, byoacrequests@gmail.com
And now you know why I went with a simple metal hinge =)

Always test before drilling.
That's what she said!

Best 45 seconds of her life though.

I got the hinges sorted out.
-
So I've been kicking around the idea of a pedestal. Legs would obviously looks stupid on this little thing.
I drew a doodle. Bad idea?
-
I don't like the pedestal. I think scale sized legs would look better.
But honestly, why would you build a small size machine and then go to put it on a pedestal? You might as well just gone full sized.
-

I would like to have gone full sized as space isn't a big issue, but we're talking at least 300 for a good sized monitor as opposed to 28 for a small one.
I have been considering scale legs, or levelers.
-
When I get gingerballs back from my buddy's house I'll take some pix of the adjustable leg levelers I got.
I thought about building a removable base/legs but I think its the perfect height on one of my tables, which is where I built it to go. Of course mines was just a proof of concept for Haruman's kits and just something different to make to try and get people building mini pins (it worked!) I might eventually build a full sized but it wouldnt be for a LONG time.
-
Do your monitors remember there power state after you've removed the plug.
I don't see this mentioned much but it's a real issue for me. If you hide your monitor controls hoe do you access the power switch???
-

I know my Playfield does. Haven't tried my backbox. Worse case I would just wire a button to the monitor power button.
-
So I got a coat of paint on. That's right I'm a sprayer.
I was going to buy some speakers and an amp on ebay until I saw my old motorcycle speakers and amp while working out in the shed.
So I finally figured out where I was going to mount them. Under the backbox.
I bought a small coin access door on ebay that was the perfect size. Since no actual coin door was small enough. Unless I went with a roll down.
I then cut out and drilled holes for the coin entry and coin reject bezels. I don't have the proper tools, so I drilled a bunch of holes and used a steel file.

you are going to make me do a Gingerballs 2.0 arent you?
Love the speaker idea, still like my hinge method better. I have other better ideas I'll update in my thread. That coin door is awesome, but I'd never use it :burgerking:

The coin door was just an idea I had to fill the middle space. My original intention was to just put that little access door there and be done with it. But then I got creative and decided to make it look more like a coin door, so I added the bezels and reject button. I do plan on adding a little functionality to it just because I recently bought a lot of namco tokens on ebay.
-
I put some magnets on the back door.

Sprayed the coin door to cover my scratches.

Attached the door.

Stuff to do:
- Add side rails
- add art
- install pc
- wire buttons
- glass
- make power button
- cooling
-
So I made another poor planning mistake. The side rails I was planning on using need to be a 1" L to reach the edge of the screen, but if I do one across the front it will overlap the coin door and top buttons..
I could get smaller ones but then John might get mad at the gap to the monitor. Or I can move the buttons and coin door a little lower and screw everything up.. any thoughts?
-
Just rail the opening part, not the entire top box?
-
That could work. I've also considered doing a black poster board frame inside around the edges of the monitors behind the glass.
-
I thought you were either going to just paint on rails (based on the "lock down bar") or just not have any at all
-
I wanted to do the L rails the way you did it. On the sides and one on the front, and a piece of metal on my lock down area.
-
This is looking good! I built one similar a few months ago and wound up using some old adjustable school desk legs so it didn't look like a baby giraffe. I got them for $10 on ebay. Keep up the good work!
-
any new picture porn?
-
Not really. Still waiting on the art. I haven't done a whole lot in a while. I can share the art if you are ready to start hating this project. But I will attach a couple.

Waiting on Ken? And I love everything about this project so far. Any issues with the rear door and those USB ports?

Yeah. I plan on putting an upper fan on the rear door as well. And remember painting it. The usb ports aren't attached to
Really just kinda dangling from the motherboard.
-
Alright so I know there is a general hatred for collage art, But i did it anyway. So feel free to hit the dislike button.
-
I like it, at least it's a mash up of pinball art. Hard edges? Thats.........BALLSY :laugh2:
-
Let's just hope I measured it right. It's been 2 weeks and still haven't got them though.
-
Here are the namco tokens I got on ebay.
I'm still working on a way to get the coin door functional. Might just make a chute and attach the coin switch to it. I might also put a microswitch behind the coin reject in case I start to get lazy.
-
Let's just hope I measured it right. It's been 2 weeks and still haven't got them though.
I apologize about not getting your prints out sooner. I sent that pic of your prints a day or two after you ordered them so that you knew they were done. Shipping them simply slipped through the cracks as I was on a couple hard deadlines with my full time job and things were a little busy.
I offer these prints at a pretty big discount to the arcade and pinball community in the hopes it helps others finish a project at at an affordable price. That said, it should not have taken 2 weeks for prints to ship...it was just a mistake. I apologize and per the email I sent you this morning I will be sure they go out today.
-
Thank you, and don't worry about it. I am in no rush.
-
Nice little pin cab. :applaud: they are fun little projects but just a stepping stone before you build a full size one, took me a little over a year and a half before I caved and made a big one, mostly pushed over the edge when i bought a couple real pins and the mini just felt weird.

It will probably happen next time I buy a new TV and I use an old one.
-
So I played around a little today.
I used the case from the motorcycle amp to make a box for the volume knob through the coin return.

This is the part I want to do something with. I'm thinking maybe a 1 inch wide piece of aluminum across. Or a sheet to cover the whole palm rest.
Also for the record, this is my father in laws shed.

Applied the side art. I still need to trim the edges with a razor.

Thank you. Give it a shot. I've put about 369 dollars into it so far. It doesn't seem like that much when I just spend $20 here and there.

Lookin' good! :applaud:
-
Get them DMDs resized and centered. >:D
Getting everything set for every table is the biggest time sink. I'm up to like 65 tables split between VP9.21 and VP9.91, all DMDs centered, resized, and recolored to match the games. Just swapped out the dual core i5 for a quad core i7 and man, now heat is such a big issue. I might be putting holes in the sides for airflow :/
-
Yeah the dmd is annoying. But I think I got it figured out.
-
Make sure you check the box for cabinet mode, and I've been editing the registry for each DMD
-
setdmd is a great utility for setting the location for all your dmd's and the defaults. more useful for 3 screen cabs, but still good for 2 http://www.pinballbulbs.com/files/setdmd.html (http://www.pinballbulbs.com/files/setdmd.html)
Also you really need to get on with VPX, so much nicer than vp9. Use the all-in-one installer for 10.1 sets it up great for you. http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=11573 (http://www.vpforums.org/index.php?app=downloads&showfile=11573)

Set DMD isn't good for 2 screen vpins, the size and location is backglass and game dependent, but its great for 3 screen set ups where the DMD size and location is constant. VPX requires a lot more CPU than VP9 does. It also doesnt run VP9 tables very well or sometimes even at all. My machine is a total spare parts build , but if someone was putting together a new rig for their Vpin , VPX is usually much prettier.
-
VPX doesn't really need more CPU as much as it needs more GPU. I'm running it just fine on a Pentium 3220 with a R7-250E graphics card, very budget build, bearing in mind I don't have the graphics all set high. After playing enough vpx, I've removed vp9 from both my cabs, physics wise and visually vpx is so much better it's hard to go back, so I quit doing so, there is enough out now on VPX to keep me happy and more all the time. But yeah, if you can barely run vp9 then vpx isn't going to do well.
Setdmd still a nice way to set the default location, gets it close on the 2 screens, then you can just use the mouse to size and position from there, no need to edit the registry to set the dmd locations.

The VPX all in one installer should have VPX VP9, and PM5 all installed ready to go. Just pick which exe your want to run. No need to change anything to run a vp9 table.
The main VPX exe is only meant for VPX tables, and yes vp9 tables wont run properly on it. Just setup 3 different VP systems in Pinball X which each use the different exe. Then you can combine all 3 systems in Pinball X as one Visual Pinball menu if you want. That's how I have mine setup.

I have 991 and 921 as my executable files. VPX runs like hot garbage, I blame my crummy GTS450 video card. I don't want to deal with 3 or 4 exes and 3 or 4 sets of tables. Pretty much everything I want to play is covered by the 2 I picked. I tried a few physmod 5 tables and they werent different/improved enough for me to bother with them. YMMV.

I have the all in one. I just haven't really gotten into working on the software end of things yet.
Also 1,000th post. And today is my 3 year anniversary of joining byoac. :afro:

Still have a lot of wire clean up to do. Waiting on another fan in the mail as well as a power inlet. Still need to get new glass to replace the ones I broke.
-
I finally got the chance to finish with the audio and got the chance to really play a few tables for the first time. It was a blast. I was really jamming on cactus canyon and creature from the black lagoon.

I got this little doodad in the mail today. Wish my mail came earlier so I could have installed it today. But I do need to get a fuse for it and some of those spade dealies.

Update... with Balls!
I got the inlet wired up to the power strip. Also adjusted the bios on the pc to boot when power is applied. So I flip the switch and the pc monitors and speakers all come on.
(BTW my pc doesn't have a switch on the power supply, just the little button on the front)

I've never been a fan of pinball, but you and Malenko got me inspired to build one of these mini pins.
( ) thanks.
Before I start cutting the panels I wanted to get the software up and running.
(Nothing compared to what you guys are doing, just pinball fx2). I've managed to get the main screen and the dmd showing but can't get the back glass to show up. I downloaded the back glass images and I've centered where the image is suppose to go but still nothing :banghead:
Tried both bmp and jpeg files. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you using just pinballfx2? Or a frontend like pinball X?
-
Just pinball Fx2. Trying to keep this as simple as possible.
Thanks
-
You will need to run a frontend like pinball X to get the backglass to display as pinballfx2 does not do this on its own.
-

Quick response so we can get back on topic - If Pinball FX2's cabinet mode backglass settings are configured, you'll see a black box with the name of the file it's looking for at the coordinates and size you specified. Make sure the file is there.
If that doesn't help, please open a new thread in the software forum so others can see your question.

You should really consider setting up pinballx. It will do all that and leave you the option of adding visual pinball and future pinball as well.

A bit off topic here, but how did you like working with the blondewood? I am going between that and MDF for my cabinet, and both have their pros and cons. This new cabinet will most likely be stored in my unheated garage, and while dry, does get damp here in New England. MDF is making me nervous about moisture, but the plywood isn't true 3/4" so that messes up t-molding.
On a pinball note, this thing is peachy! I wish you had utilized a plunger, but I am sure a fire button is much easier to mess with...lol. Nice work!

Mdf was my first choice, but I went to the wrong lowes and wasn't about to drive across town to the other, so I went with what they had. You have to be careful working with the blondewood as it chips easily when cutting. It feels sturdier than mdf and it might hold up longer. Just slightly more difficult to work with, but not bad. Also mdf was a little more than $10 cheaper.
As for the fire button, it was just so much cheaper and easier. I had every intention going in to use some sort of plunger. I even started a thread in the pinball section and was going to go with PL1's mouse option, but I passed out.

I got around to cutting a sheet of steel to cover the palm rest/lockdown area. The plexiglass for the playfield is there, but the monitor and plexi need to be cleaned. Still need a piece for the backglass monitor.

Finished. The metal still needs to be properly polished, but I'm calling it done. Force feedback may come in the future.

As you can tell from the hot glue, i was only worried about functionality and outside appearance.
The inside could be a roasted dog turd for all i care, as long as it works.

Thank you. Finding things like that is kinda hard when you're not even certain what they're called!

Well lets hope it works like the sansmart relay.

those chinese solenoids suck, i had 10 i would of sold to you and i have a whole set of seimens contactors i'm trying to get rid of. Make sure the nuts on the ends are tight over time they loosen and the whole thing comes apart.
and dont forget your diodes.
and why didn't you just get the 16channel one? for 18.00. That way you can expand to more toys if you want to and you know it works http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/291989573347 (http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/291989573347)

I wnt with the 8 instead of 16 because the cab is so small that i didnt want to go overboard with too much stuff. Thanks for the heads up on tightening the solenoid nuts. Wish i would have known anout the contractors you have earlier.
-
Well i was planning to wire up the solenoids today but i cant find my diodes, so i orderd some new ones. I swear every time my wife cleans she throws away everything that she dont know what it is.
-
lol. guys have a system. It may look like a pile to wimmins, but we know right where stuff is..............except where we are headed or where we put our keys.

Get you some cms002's
and plastic or metal L Brackets
the cms002's make a good sound for bumpers and sling shots, the L brackets are for the flippers.
not sure if you've done your research but vp tables work out the box for force feedback, pbfx2 and future pinball use doflinx for feedback. ultradmd tables feedback have to be added into the dofconfigtool as they are not rom based.
-
I got everything wired up but can't for the life of me figure out how to get the solenoids setup with dof. Any help would be great.

Not really. I looked at it a bit. Is internet required on the cab pc to set it up or can i export the info ro a flash drive? No internet where the cab is currently stored. I can plug my phone into it and use my 4g

once its setup then you it creates necessary files for you to put in your dof config folder. so you can download, put on thumb drive and add to your cab.

Ok cool i barely checked that out today and it came off as this online only thing. I will give it a go.
