Title: What powers MAME?
Post by: lisowskikevin on June 18, 2016, 10:39:08 pm
Hey guys,

Quick question....what powers MAME? Does MAME run soley off of processor or would adding Meg ram make it run super smooth? I'm noticing lag on blitz

Thx for the help.

That's just Blitz. You'll need a beefy, beefy processor to get it to run decently. Ram won't help as much.

It runs on hazlenuts and fabridge eggs.....

But seriously,  you need a beefy Intel processor for Blitz.

Like all computer software mame runs on Mountain Dew and Doritos, or rather the people that wrote it do and mame runs on their time and effort.

As Yots noted, CPU is king for MAME. If you are using any of the "filters" (HLSL, GLSL, BGFX) then GPU also comes into play and can be a bottleneck.

...adding Meg ram...

WTF is that?  Is that like the evil doppelganger of Meg Ryan?

If you have HLSL enabled, disable it for that game.  That will make a pretty big difference.

If you have a 64-bit operating system, using the 64 bit version of MAME gains you some performance on that driver.
There's also an option in the dip switch settings to run the game at a lower resolution, which makes it less demanding.
These don't make a huge difference, but it may be the difference between having sound skips or not.

Blitz is one of the most desired "processor hogs" along with Gauntlet Legends.
Pretty much any 3D game from the mid 90's forward is going to require at 3.5Ghz+ depending on the model of processor.

putting Blitz/Gauntlet in standard res instead of medium res also helps.

Great thanks for the tips.

I'm not running a top of the line computer. It's just an Intel Core 2 Duo.
