assuming we are doing  slang and things of that ilk? no defining a 2way,4way,8way,spinner,etc?

CHD - Compressed Hunks of Data , usually a hard drive or optical disc image
ROM - Read Only Memory, the data from the chips located on a PCB
High Score Kit - An add on for an arcade PCB that enables you to save your high scores after power off, if the original board didnt support it
JAMMA - Japanese Arcade Machine Manufacturers Association , commonly use to define the standard way to wire an arcade machine
JAMMA+ - JAMMA standard and additional wiring, such as a kick harness
JVS - JAMMA Video Standard aka JAMMA 2 , Arcade wiring standard that uses HD-15 for video and RCA for Audio, Naomi uses this
kick harness - Used to add extra buttons to a game, named kick harness since they became popular with street fighter to add the kicks to the game
bootleg - an illegally manufactured PCB copying a legitimate one.
MVS - Multi Video System aka Neo Geo Arcade
1/2/4/6 slot - Neo Geo motherboard and the number of carts it can hold at one time
Supergun - Allows someone to plug arcade PCBs into a TV and play them
sitdown - an arcade machine you sit down at to play that more often than not has a seat attached; typically driving games
stand up- an arcade machine you stand in front of to play
cocktail - a table style arcade machine , typically with a player at each end, each with their own set of controls.

to fix 2 you have:
arcade game - the PCB that you plug into an arcade machine to play the game
arcade machine - wood/plastic/metal box containing a dispay, wiring, power, controls, etc  to play arcade games

feel free to change any working I have up there that you dont like.

not arcade machine.... It's arcade cabinet, at least, as it pertains to the thing you put pcbs in.  Yes even the plastic and metal ones are arcade cabinets.

Actually I've never heard the term arcade machine used except from "normals" who don't quite know what to call a game.  You call it by the title... ie "I picked up a Tron today."  If you just picked up the pcb you say "I picked up a Tron pcb" or "I picked up a Tron board"

Also spelling out the abbreviations doesn't really define the term.  Chances are if you know what a cathode ray tube is you know how it is abbreviated as well.

crt = cathode ray tube (old fashioned "tube" monitor)
lcd = liquid crystal display (new flat panel monitor)

I'm not exactly sure who this glossary is meant for though..... anyone that is on this forum probably knows them already.

Thanks Malenko! Couple of the ones you added I was not totally sure on.

Sure, we can all use google to look up terms but I find it more useful to get the actual definition from the enthusiast themselves. Also, if figured there would also be some more tongue-and-cheek terms as well.  :)

Here is a term I've seen misused on occasion:

NOS - New Old Stock - Original (not reproduction) merchandise being offered for sale which was manufactured long ago but that has never been used.

-cade works well if it's part of a pun. But just tacking it onto a word? GTFO.

Hmm.. I always thought CHD stood for Complete Hard Disk or Compressed Hard Disk.  Ha.

Hey man, there was an asterisk there to indicate the term may offend some...

I need to excuse myself and figure out how to remove my foot from my mouth.

Actually, I think yours works because it fits with name. It was not arbitrarily stuck on the end.

Full disclosure: my original MAME cabinet was going to be called the Supercade. But then I wised up after looking at some of the awesome custom themes here.

Yeah, but you named it that when you still had hair on your nuts, so we're grandfathering it in.

For the record, we've got to give Kombat Kade a pass on the 'k' because all c words in Mortal Kombat are spelled with a 'k' to be kool.  No excuse for the cade though.

How about....

*hyper-_______  = some sort of software add-on or middle-ware that has absolutely positively nothing to do with hyperspin but the author named it that way because they use hyperspin for their frontend.

project = a structure, device or corner of a room that is used to throw infinite amounts of money and time at.

Yep, that sounds like a pretty accurate definition. Especially for me.  :-[

There's so much TMI coming on that front that you'll be under your bed weeping.

Soon.
