Title: Very Strange - Same MAME / Same ROM - Only 1 Works
Post by: Dai Shan on May 06, 2016, 10:56:14 am
I got a new U360 and when I fired up Star Wars on my MAME machine, it said I was missing a bunch of ROMs.

However, when I fired it up on my home office desktop PC, it started just fine.

The kicker is that both of them are IDENTICAL. My home office desktop is literally a copy/paste of the MAME machine. Same MAME and same romset.

I'm using MAMEUI32 0.141u2.

I am at an utter and complete loss as to how this is happening

Are the folder names/paths exactly the same on both computers?

No, different directory structures

Nope, both are starwars.zip and "Star Wars (rev. 2)" in the menu

Im with Darth, check your paths. Make sure mame on the cab is pointing to the correct rom folder.

No, it's "starwars". The issue is not that MAME is not finding the rom it needs, it's just not finding the specific roms inside the zip file it wants. As if the romset was incomplete.

Here's a new bizarre twist...

I just compared the contents of both zip files and they both contain the same roms! Even the sizes of the zip files are identical down to the byte.

So I've got one MAME saying it can't find what's actually there for just this one game. I copied the stupid rom 3 times, I emailed it to the MAME machine thinking maybe my USB stick corrupted it (even though I can open the zip file).

Crazy

I'm not sure what you mean. The MAME cab is pointing to the rom folder that's there. The path might not be the same as my office computer, but that shouldn't matter. The mame cab is pointed to its rom folder (same actual roms that I use on my office PC) and when I run MAMEUI32 on the MAME cab, I can click any other game marked green and it'll open and run just fine.

run it from command line and see what it says is missing.

Does Star Wars need any bios or anything that you may not have copied over?  I just saw where you were using MameUI, doesn't that tell you what rom/file is missing?

1) Yes I can run other roms
2) Yes MAMEUI tells me the roms I'm missing. Earlier I said that the actual roms it says I'm missing are in the file. They are there (increasing the strangeness of this)
3) I just read the MAME Wiki about needing a BIOS for some games! This actually led me to kinda solve this problem....

I saw BIOS files on my office PC, so I said screw it. EVERYTHING is going on a USB stick and being copied to my MAME cab. Any file matches and I would decline copying so I knew only the new files copied.

Nothing copied.

I ran Star Wars, same issue. I decided since I'm here I'll cut/paste my office PC rom yet again. Still nothing.

Then I thought, "This is nuts. I even have Star Wars in my frontend favorites. Why would I put that there if it never worked??" So I fired up mGalaxy and ran the game.

IT WORKED!

Makes NO sense. mGalaxy uses the same roms, uses the same MAMEUI that I was running manually. The office has the same MAMEUI and roms....you know what, I'm done caring about why this happens because some how, some way, it works through the frontend :D :D :D

If anyone has tips on analog settings, let me know. I found some online that are good, but if I can get the cursor to center or be smoother overall, I'll give it a shot.

Right now I'm running both X/Y Axis Speed settings at a value of 50, and both Sensitivity settings at a value of 80.

Now if someone can just invent a Yoke that can snap onto the U360's shaft to make it feel proper. :D

Thanks to everyone that took time to try and help me with this. I appreciate it.

As far as centering the cursor, just make a few big circles with your joystick/yoke. It should correct itself.  It's never centered when you turn it on.

Yeah I heard that. I tried it once but it still leaned left or right of center a bit (forget which). I'll keep trying when I place but it doesn't affect aiming when playing so no biggie.
