Score points for landing on an ever decreasing patch of 'good' land - as you descend without opening your parachute your landing point becomes smaller, but the points become higher. Be careful not to pull the ripcord too late! Each time you successfully land the plane goes lower.

I play this with my kid once in a while. Easy and quick to learn and play. I never realized before posting that bezel picture that you get a bonus for spelling out 'skydiver'.

Yep - it doubles your score for the rest of the game - unfortunately it usually takes till almost the end before you get it spelled out.
Got a few more games in and got a bit better at judging the landing (mine is off to the one side so landing to the right of the flag even when you get a foot in it counts it as out but to the left is a bit more leeway. - still missed getting the skydiver bonus by 2 letters and scored - 7,060

Nice -- Did the same surprising how quick the scores can go up once you get going - but couldn't keep it going that long - lost 3 lives in a row when the wind shifted to full speed one direction and the flag was at the same side of the screen the plane was coming from so couldn't jump and deploy fast enough (funny thing is it was pretty much as shown in the screenshot except the plane was much lower and heading the opposite direction

Someone explain "EXTENDED PLAY" to me please. Do you guys get an extra life when you hit 4,000 points? I sure as hell don't.

LOL - Nope I don't either so haven't really figured out what that meant yet either !!

From the manual :

So, it seems that 4000 points is just the threshold for having your highscore displayed in the attract mode.

I think you misread -- that just says that the amount needed is displayed in attract mode ( ie. 4,000 , 4,700 , 5,400 or 6,100 depending on the # lives setting ) - Still doesn't say what the Extended play actually is suppose to be.
Like the 5,400 shown attached if you set it to 5 lives rather than 3 !
-
Okay, so then I'm stumped, too :dunno I watched a youtube-vid, the guy claimed that you get an extra life at 4000 points, but he actually didn't.

Nice job! :applaud: Thought I was safe :'(
High score competition (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143138.0.html) thread updated.
WakiMiko's pick then, it seems.

Ironically, that score was so ridiculously high that I really wanted to beat it. The Twin Galaxies score is at nearly 27k, the MARP score is at 30,070. So we are in good company :)
-
I should add that I tried multiple times to beat my 28k, and couldn't even break 20 after MULTIPLE attempts. Wind has to favor you, and early bonus too.
-
Well, I tried to submit my 50k score, but the "500 Internal Server Error" prevented me from posting ::)
Does anyone want to pick a game for me? Otherwise I'll pick a random shmup I've never played before :P
-
Just pick some shmup or have a look at Badmouth's game lists. Those are approved by experts :)

Well i just discovered DoDonPachi (based on your mention, as well as the 10p arcade podcast),and am in LOVE, haha! But haven't checked...I assume we've done that before?
EDIT - it doesn't LOOK like we've done it?
But that's just my 2 cents, feel free to do whatever.
-
You want to go toe to toe with one of the best shmup-players playing his favorite game ? You are a brave man.
-
Contrary to popular belief I'm actually not very good, especially when compared to the citizens of the shmups.com forums. But I've put a lot of time into DoDonPachi and while I can't even 1CC it, it would still feel unfair to pick it. But feel free to pick it when it is your turn
I've settled on a game and will make a thread in a second.
-
You may not be very good compared to the shmups.com guys, but compared to the guys at the byoac forum ... That's another story. You can't even 1CC Do DonPachi ? Man, I'm considering myself doing well when I'm finally able to off the first boss without using a smartbomb.

I'm not worried about that. Not because I think I can beat him. Just because seeing the competition shows me that I'm not even in the same class as some of you guys. Not that I'm giving up, ohh no. But I am hoping for games that are really fun. : )

Yeah but the time you put into DDP is nowhere close to what I put in it (not to mention countless other shmups).

DDP definitely is a lot of fun :D. It's all practice really. Also, while memorization is definitely a huge part of shmups, general "skills" like r"eading bullet patterns/knowing where to go" transfer pretty well between games.
