I got an offer of a free 25" Sony Trinitron presentation monitor for my game project. It is a little older (1994) but comes with a computer interface to feed right off the standard moniitor cable.
Being not too farmiliar with the actual requirements for a "good" tv my question is this, The resolution is 720 dots X 480 lines in RGB mode. Is this good enough for use with MAME?
What potential problems exist if a newer game requires a higher resolution screen to play? Will it simply not work or is there a fix? Do many games require more resolution than that?

Snag that puppy up as fast as you can! I think I know what Type of tv you're talking about, It's got a multi rgb input port on the back along with composite inputs, and possible a svideo port.
Basically, you can use this un-modified as a std. res. arcade monitor, you can hook up an arcadevga card to it, or use the composite/svideo video out from a decent video card to drive it.
Presentation monitors have a much better picture quality than most tv's (sharper images)

Yes, this sucker has several options for connection on the back. It doesn't have the S-video hooks. The RGB hookups are used directly from the interface.
It seemed all too simple, so I am looking for the pitfalls before I tear apart the 17" monitor that currently resides in my yet unfiished cab.

It's a free 27" TV. I fail to see a potential problem. If it was offered to me I would already have it in my garage! :D

Just noticed this thread, and would be interested if there was any feedback on the Presentation monitor - such as how did you end hooking it up? Does it look better via VGA or RGB? I know several presentation monitors actually line double any 15Khz input giving (very good) 100Hz display, does the picture look ok like this?

Last I checked Mame didn't have any games higher res than medium resolution, and that monitor is higher res than that, so you should be fine.
If you are worried you can always bring it by my place and I will be happy to give you a more mainstream 21" display for it.

If I recall, those presentation monitors are pretty rugged as well as having a great display.
I don't know why the original poster even stopped to ask here about whether to pick it up. :)

I installed that monitor in my cab.
It seems to only like to display at the 720X480
I can set windows to run that resolution but there is a problem in Mame.
I have been using mameclassic at the front end and it doesn't allow for that resolution. So I can't get any games to come up with the proper resolution.
There has to be an easy fix, I just don't know it...
Would a different front end be the answer?
Any suggestions?
Iron chief - The computer monitor was basically PNP. This tv resolution problem is the reason that I wondered if I should get it because I didn't (and still don't) know how to set it up... But thanks for the nob-bashing... :P

You may be able to use AdvanceMAME with it.
