I quit last monday. I have not been 100 percent smoke free since then (I have cheated a couple of times), but the physical addiction part is now broken.
Still working on the mental addiction.
-
Is it Menta or MAME addiction :)
-
Good luck. It's an easy habit to fall back into. I hope you manage to make the change permanent.
-
Good luck to both of you. I quit something like 12 or 13 years ago, can't even stand the smell of the things anymore. It's probably the best thing you can do for yourself.

I quit about 1 year ago. Let me give you some advice. Just don't put one in your mouth ever again, seriously. Best thing I ever did.
-
Today was a rougher than usual Wednesday, I can't wait to get the heck out of work and take a slow, long drag off of a well deserved cigarette.
Ahhhhhhh! I can almost taste it.

It's been just over 2 years since I quit - haven't had one since. I used the wellbutrin. Don't go to bars for awhile - and like Apollo said, don't ever stick a cig in your mouth again - even cigars. The mental addiction doesn't seem to ever fully go away, every now and then I really want one, but it's just a matter of self-control. Good luck :)

I quit 2-1/2 years ago and I STILL want one! I do feel a lot better and my wife kisses me a lot more :) I don't always think about it but when I do, I really want one. I also work with a woman that quit about 13 years ago and still wanted one. She recently went to Mexico and she decided she was going to smoke down there. She did quit again when she got back though. I would not have been able to quit again. I know that if I have 1, it is all over. Good luck!

I quit smoking about 6 months ago, had been smoking fior 12 years. The first week was hardest, but its getting easier every day. There are still moments though when the craving hits hard. Especially driving long trips...

I don't smoke, except for weed, hash... ;D

bad fiend! ;)

I don't think this is nearly as bad. The physical addiction is negligible, if present at all. While smoking marijuana is probably pretty comparable, health risk-wise, as smoking an equal amount of tobacco cigarettes, people don't smoke the equivalent of one, or two or three packs of marijuana per day (at the very least not consistantly on a day-in day-out basis). People don't even want to. The cravings and physical dependancy just aren't there.
Also, marijuana smoke just doesn't stink as bad as cigarette smoke, and while that is a matter of opinion nobody could argue against the fact that marijuana smoke doesn't linger the way cigarette smoke does. I can tell that someone has smoked a cigarette in my apartment three days after it happened. The smell of marijuana is usually undetectable an hour after someone has smoked it.
That said, I just don't enjoy smoking marijuana very much, and find cigarettes repulsive so I smoke neither.

Hi,
I also quite smoking about one and a half year ago ... now the great part (wich should motivate all of you trying to quite) a pack of 20 cigarretes here costs 2,10 Euros. I used to smoke one pack a day, so that makes 548 times 2,10 equal to 1150,8 Euros wich is about 1,473.02 USD ...
So the good news are that my Mame cabinet will cost me exactly - (minus) 150,80 Euros ... ;D ... yap ... it's not just your health that is improved :D

If you don't really want to quit, don't bother.. That's my only advice.
I tried a couple of times to quit for other people (girlfriends, etc), and EVERY time I did that i went back.. because i wanted to smoke. Plus, if you get pissed at the person you're quitting for, the first thing you do is go smoke to throw it back in their face.
Every time I tried, I kept going back.
Then one day, I REALLY actually wanted to quit. I didn't light up a cigarette that day, or the next day... by the third day, I was going to bed at 11:00PM, and realized I hadn't had a cigarette, and didn't even realize it..
Every once in a while, in certain situations, (When I'm REALLY full, or in a bar), I'll want a cigarette... but I wait out the 5 second craving and I'm fine. I fell 100 times better than I did before.. smartest thing I ever did (and economical.. they're $5 a pack in CT.. that's $150 a month!! >:()

I quit a little over a year ago.
If there is any advice I can give, it's to go "cold turkey" and work your way through it no matter how difficult it is for you. It's all about will-power and if you don't have any, then maybe this process will help you develop some.
If you nurse it along and kid yourself into thinking you can "taper off" until you don't need them anymore, you probably will end up eventually smoking again instead of quitting like you wanted.
The physical addiction takes a while to go away. I have heard that it only takes a few days for that to wear off.....I don't believe it. For weeks afterwards, I could actually feel my lungs aching for smoke when I was in the presence of someone else who was smoking. Weird, to say the least.
The psychological addiction goes on for much longer. It's the hardest to deal with when many of your favorite activities were things you did with a lit-cigarette in your mouth. Suck on hard candy, chew on a rice cake or eat something else that takes your mind off your cravings and won't kill you with fat or high calories. Whatever you decide to use as a "replacement", make sure you have it with you at all times. Long trips in the car are the hardest and it's very easy to pick up a pack of smokes when you stop for gas...
Oh, and you WILL gain weight. Nicotine is a poison that acts as a stimulant. It kept your activity up and your appetite down. You won't have this working on you any more and whatever edibles you ingest to combat the habit won't help this any. After a while, you will get your wind back and excercise won't be as difficult. If you feel like you need to smoke, go jog a mile. That should take care of it :)
I now find the smell of cigarette smoke pretty much disgusting. When I'm around a smoker, I no longer have a craving to smoke as well, rather I find it pretty annoying. But I put up with it when I have to, because I was there once.
Until you get to this stage, you aren't out of the woods. But it's a good cause so hang in there. If there's anything that is known for certain, it's that eventually everyone dies. If you place any value on your own life, you won't continue to do things that accelerate the process. And smoking is definitely one of those things.
Good luck.

I quit a little over 6 months ago, cold turkey. I smoke in my dreams all the time, but haven't had an actual puff since. I feel really strong this time around (I don't really feel like a smoker who has quit, I feel more like non-smoker). I'm not counting the days or anything, I'm just figuring on never smoking again. I even go out for cigarrette breaks with my smoking friends, I just don't smoke. That way I don't feel left out of the club.
It's great to have an extra $5.00/day that has already been budgeted for something sinful - now I get to spend it on fun addictions (StarRoms, Ultimarc, Oscar, Dreamcast, etc.) instead of a smelly deadly one.
