Every year I try to give my mom something thoughtful, because, well she's my mom. This year I seem to have found myself in the middle of a wild goose chase.
Mom loves pop tarts. She literally wakes up by eating one. Somehow she has the magical ability to constantly get them stuck in the toaster. So this year I'm looking for a toaster specifically designed for pop tarts or a toaster that has removable sides so she can get them out. I would really appreciate any help you guys can give me. I've been to appliance stores, and I've looked online, but the "good" toasters seem to be with extra wide slots (the better to gobble up the tarts) or with the ability to toast 14 slices of bread at once. I just want a pop tart proof toaster or one with the old fashioned fold down sides.

Perhaps a toaster oven with a toaster slot - that way you have the oven door to open if the pop tart gets stuck or could always just place the pop tarts on the oven shelf for warming rather than use the slot :dunno

Assuming that you've already ruled out a toaster oven, the feature/accessory that you appear to be looking for is a "sandwich basket" or "sandwich rack" like this (http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Toaster-Sandwich-Accessory-Alessi/dp/B0031YEK9E).

The Kenwood TTM610 (http://www.amazon.com/Kenwood-TTM610-Collection-Adjustable-Toasting/dp/B00SJLD7D4) comes with one.

Im glad you think about your mom. My mom has been gone for 18 years. She passed on Dec 2 so it is always a bad time for me this time of year. I highly recommend everyone to visit your mom as much as possible, and call her at least a few times a week. Dont let lame excuses to not call or visit stop you because some day you will regret it, trust me.
Anyway, back to the topic.
I like that basket idea, but make sure it has a plastic handle, looks like it may be possible for it to touch the heating element of the toaster and perhaps charge it. (Think why it is a no no to use a metal fork to get something out of the toaster).
I had a waffle iron once that had plates you could change out to use to heat sandwiches or whatever. Wonder how that would work on pop tarts?

Eh my Mom's just 20 min away. I see her so much I think she gets sick of me sometimes. ;)
So I think PL1 saved the day on this one. I couldn't find a sandwich rack that fit on a normal toaster, but I did find these little things:
http://www.amazon.com/Reusable-Non-Stick-Toaster-Bags/dp/B00RHE79UG/ref=sr_1_18?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1450028755&sr=1-18&keywords=toaster+sandwich+rack (http://www.amazon.com/Reusable-Non-Stick-Toaster-Bags/dp/B00RHE79UG/ref=sr_1_18?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1450028755&sr=1-18&keywords=toaster+sandwich+rack)
It's too cheap a gift, but I think they will work and I'll get her a new toaster without the dead remains of a thousand pop tarts inside.
-
That looks like a neat idea, let us know how they work. Wouldnt mind having a few in the cabinet drawer for just such a duty.

Naw, you did.
I looked at those toaster bags and figured that they weren't what you wanted. :embarassed:

Might I recommend a electrician to run a 220 volt line to the kitchen, a new 220 volt toaster for the best cooked pop-tarts money can buy, and a had crafted knife specially designed to put into the toaster to free the stuck pop-tarts.
Boom! Instant inheritance.

Your mom would love this toasted cheese sandwich maker for the fire pit.

Well honestly I hoped for a more permanent solution, but I don't think one exists. If it were me I would want the fancy schmancy toaster that the basket goes in, but my guess is mom wouldn't like it because the slots aren't toast sized, so things can roll around. I'm thinking there might be room for a product here. It astounds me that a pop tart toaster doesn't exist. I mean they have hot dog toasters.

. . . and a taco toaster (http://www.amazon.com/Nostalgia-Electrics-BTS200-Fiesta-Toaster/dp/B00JZMDMAE/).

Man, I love those hot-dog toasters. I want one sooo bad. I wonder if a Cheddar-wurst would fit in one?
-
Saw one of these while on vacation, spendy yes but perhaps you can turn one up from a local craigslist or other source?

Conveyor belt toaster, put it in the top and it travels through and boom out the bottom. Can do several hundred pop tarts a hour!!!! she will never be without.

I've been told they don't work. It burns the outside of the dog and the inside is left raw. I think the only way a hd toaster would work is if a metal rod skewered the dog heating it from the inside.
-
Have you tried searching "side toaster" on e-bay.
Lots of old models come up. ;D

When I was a kid, we had a hotdog cooker that cooked them with SCIENCE!...
...and also electricity from the wall.
electrocuted those dogs till they where cooked. you never forget the smell. :-\

It would be hard to get them stuck in this (http://www.amazon.com/West-Bend-78224-Quik-Serve-Toaster/dp/B000FCTOHS/ref=sr_1_81?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1450297207&sr=1-81).

Yeah I saw those after I ordered. I'm going to try this solution and if it doesn't work I'll try one of those.
-
How did it go?
-
I don't know yet. Mom had to go to the ER shortly after Xmas. Her appendix is acting up and she might have to eventually get it removed. She was back at home a few days ago only to discover that the toaster I had bought her was severely damaged. I would blame amazon, but the shipping box and the product box were fine.... so it was damaged at the factory?
Anyway, I'll return it and I'll probably spring for the one token linked to unless she finds one she'd rather have.

You should make your mom homemade Pop-Tarts (http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2012/02/bravetart-how-to-make-brown-sugar-cinnamon-pop-tarts-at-home-recipe.html)! I don't know about your mom, but my mom said the best gifts were home made.
