Post by: adder on October 29, 2015, 08:26:11 am
what are some non-arcade games which you have completed during your gaming life  8)

('continues'/saves are ok, but not level skipping or hacks/trainers)

here are some of mine:

duke nukem 3d (pc)  (surely on a lot of people's list ;))
halflife (pc)   (surely also on a lot of people's list ;))

zelda (nes)

prince of persia (amiga)

manic miner (zx spectrum)  ;D

1942 Arcade Version

Last few stages sucked about $10 in quarters from me.

Had to have been around 1985 or 86'. Don't remember the final score, but I'm thinking the game gave you like 10,000,000 points or something after you beat it. I don't have the wrist reflexes or patience to pull that off now.

EDIT: You said NON arcade... my bad..

Zelda... all of them... Metroid/Super Metroid... All the Super Mario Bros. games.... Act Raiser.. All the Sonic games on Sega Genesis... Lots of others, too tired to think ATM.

A bit dated but you might find this interesting. GDC: Most players don't finish games (http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/03/17/gdc-most-players-donat-finish-games)

The list of games I DIDN'T beat might be shorter:

Resident Evil 4 on Gamecube. I rage-quit that one at the final boss battle. Nope. Never went back.

Loved that game so much but nearly put a hole in my TV over it.

Last Resident Evil I bothered with was Code Veronica on the Dreamcast.  I got as far as the part where you had to smash a crystal ball under a pneumatic press.  You had a multitude of weapons including grenades and a crow bar that could have easily smashed a ball.  But nope.  The press.  And you couldn't roll the ball under it.  You had to walk under it, drop it, and walk back out.  Then walk under it again to get the item inside.  Made it through that part, realized I was wasting my time on crap, and never really touched that series again.  I do have some "Resident Evil Collection" for Gamecube that's apparently "worth money" that I've never played.  Oh well.

I am terrible. I feel a sort of guilt if I start a game and never beat it. That's why I'm working my way through Super Time Force. Lately I have beaten:

Silent Hill 1, 2, 3
RE 1, 2, 3, code veronica
Pa Rappa the Rapper

Same here.

Ninja Gaiden for the NES. Got so pissed at it I tossed it out the window during a blizzard.

R-Type for the SNES... not sure why I never finished this one.

Shining in the Darkness Genie... this was stolen from me and by the time I recovered it a year later, my save game was, of course, deleted.

Quad Challange... this game sucked royally. This and some sort of RPG (Crimson Sword or some such) are the only two Genie games I ever got rid of. They sucked that bad.

Willy Beamish SCD. Lost many hours of gameplay due to bad save data in the internal SCD memory. Hosed all my save games but the WB loss was sinister due to the hours I put in. WB was the driving force behind my buying the memory cartridge. Point is, I was so furious I never tried to play it again.

Shining Force CD... play this one for more than a few minutes and you'll see why..... all battles and no RPG.

A large collection of GCN games were taken during a split. Forgot what was in there. Same for about half my PSX titles at the time.

There's been a few forgettable games. I never finished the Dr. Pepper shooter because the game has a game stopping bug preventing any further progress.

If I don't complete a title, it's because I just don't have the time to sit there and do it. Not really unbeatable in that sense. More like WIPS.

Ditto.  I beat pretty much every game I get... that's kind of the point.

There have been a few recently but I think it has more to do with my health issues than anything.... when leisure time does come up I don't always feel like it.

I haven't beaten Bayonetta/Bayonetta 2 because towards the end the first one started getting really tedious and I lost interest.  I bought a Gears of War collection towards the end of the 360's run because it was super cheap and I wanted to see if I'd like them... well I didn't... so I didn't go past the first couple levels in the first game.

I'm 40 and I just beat The Legend of Zelda for the first time without using Game Genie codes or cheats.  Been working on NES Metroid since 1986 so I'll let you know in 10 years when I beat that one.   :banghead:

Holly crap, SML.  I can't tell you how many hours I spent playing that game.  Probably as much as I played Tetris on gameboy.  Two of my favorite GB games.

Closing in on Far Cry 4, and I'm contemplating going for 100% completion.  So... many.... propaganda posters....

Once you get over it being just a high resolution reskin of Far Cry 3 (which admittedly took me quite awhile) it's actually an excellent game, and probably the best thing I've played since Far Cry 3.   Plenty of "video game logic" but I've encountered very few glitches after Sony fixed my system.

Yeah, I used to play it in the laundromat when I was a backpacker. In fact I may have had the breakthrough in that laundromat from memory! I think it's still the only old school game I've completed. New games don't really count since you'll get there eventually.

Has anyone ever beat Simon's Quest within the allowable time limit?  Wondering if it's even worth going back and trying to complete since I never have.

Which makes me wonder, what games have the most satisfying endings for you?

Shining Force and Chrono Trigger are high on that list for me.

Uncharted Series on PlayStation. If you haven't played the series, then you wouldn't understand.

In terms of the classics, Super Metroid is a hard ending to surpass.  So much is said without a single line of text.

I liked Resident Evil 4's ending as well.  Finally when the hero saves the princess she at least offers.  ;)

There are many games I have played all the way through but often done over a long time

some games that come quickly to mind are

The Immortal (Sega genesis) I had to call the 1-900 number for some clues,  my mom was not thrilled

Lolo (Nintendo) I really enjoyed that game

Red Dead Revolver (PS2) it was a bitter sweet day when I beat it, I was happy to beat it but I instantly missed that great game

I remember that being the first and only game we ever traded in at Gamestop.  Not sure why.

HAHA! I had to do the same thing!  I loved that game, but that stinkin' dragon at the end!  (And that was WITH nintendo power showing us the maps to those rooms where the worms would pop up and eat you!

One of the best NES games, IMHO.

Anyone here ever beat Shadow of the Beast?
I hadi it for Sega Genesis. It was an odd game and maybe not all that popular.
